Apparently, the filmed activity which resulted in child porn charges being laid against the lad was semi-naked girls playing Twister. So it’s a bit more exploitative than just filming your mates baring their arses, but it’s still just giggling nudity at a party: it’s not what I’d call pornography, and I expect a judge will throw it out of court.

It’s certainly hardly up there with what the Werribee rapists planned with their video of the attack, for no child porn charges at all.

Oh, I still think he’s acting the git. I just don’t find his response to the ACA interviewer to be necessarily all that awful, in light of her attitude.

As to the arse-baring, I was going on what was pixellated out of the news coverage, and that there haven’t been any reports of photos of actual sexual activity. So yes, speculating.

Agree, on Werribee, of course. And I should have explained ACA’s trash-tabloid nature, for overseas viewers. I’m afraid I don’t share your warming for this guy, however – I knew too many of his sort when I was at uni, and all, when doors were closed, did a lot worse than sneer at cameras.

Sorry Helen, I think I’ve misled you. The Werribee rapists were charged with assault, but despite them filming the rape and planning to distribute DVDs of the rape for sale, none of them have been charged with making child porn. That was the comparison I was making – it seems ridiculous to charge teens taking shots of each other’s arses bared for the purposes of showing contempt with “child porn”.

First, while I’m all for individual responsibility, I don’t see why the Victorian Police have a right to bill anyone for doing their job This has been used against worthier people, e.g. to use an example I have been highlighting, the Tasmanian police's court action against Alannah Beltran (the "Weld Angel"). I had forgotten that the Werribee rapists hadn't even been charged. Is that right? F**king offensive doesn't even cover it. Despite his horrendous fashion sense and smarmy attitude, I’m warming to him (although I’m still glad he’s not mine). It’s hardly surprising that he responded with scorn and insolence to the patronising interviewer.

There’s a few good points made over at LP regarding the over-reaction of the police with the prospective charges against him. In particular, the idea that he or others might be charged with “child porn” charges for taking photos of each other’s bare arses when the minors who committed (and filmed) the Werribee assault were charged with nothing? How fucking offensive is that?

Mark’s also right on this:

Yup, the kid sounds self absorbed and thick. So do most teenage boys and girls. They also lie to their parents and refuse to sound contrite when the rest of us think they should. It doesn’t necessarily follow that the kid is irredeemable. He just got a hellava lot more publicity than other kids get, which is probably counter productive.

I don’t know who annoys me more– the kid or the interviewer (to be fair, the interviewer just annoys me because I’m biased against ACA in any form).

It’s great that you linked to the Surfdom piece in order to provide context. As it is, people see this as a reflection on the kid as an individual. If he was Aboriginal, his entire race would be considered responsible, people would be talking about interventions, making broad statements about what his parents must be like…
