OK, I’ve bitten the bullet. Crunch.
Announcing: the Down Under Feminists Carnival!
This carnival, with submissions hosted at blogcarnival.com, is open to all feminist bloggers in Australia and New Zealand. Showcase your own posts or those of others.
HOW?
WHEN?
The deadline is the end of each month. Each host should aim to get carnival up in the first week of the following month.
WHAT?
Submissions of all types are welcome: long thinky pieces, quick hits, images, vlogs, whatever you’re writing. All flavours of feminism are welcome, too. New bloggers and established bloggers. Formed ideas and unformed ones. Please don’t be shy – submit, submit, submit.
If you’d like to write something but don’t have a blog and don’t want one, send it through and we’ll consider posting it as a guest post. But blogs are quick, easy, and free, so why not get one of your own? Check out wordpress.com, or livejournal.com if you’d like a private/friends-locking feature for more personal posts. Carnivals are a great way to publicise your new blog – or your old one!
THEMES
The categories at this stage are: politics, violence, racism, science, media, family & work, language, history, health & disability, reproductive justice, general feminism, other.
If I’ve missed something obvious, please let me know. I haven’t set any particular monthly themes at this point – what do you think? Perhaps this is something that could come later. If you’re hosting and you’d like to set a theme, you’re welcome.
I also don’t have a logo yet – if you have any bright ideas, drop a comment or an email.
WHAT NEXT?
1. Mark your calendar with a repeat and set an alert, sometime in the last week of each month, to submit some posts.
2. Spread the word amongst your feminist networks. Please include a link to this post and to the submission form.
3. Consider offering to host an edition of the carnival anytime down the track. Great fun, but it does take a bit of work and commitment, so please factor that in. The work will primarily be in the first couple or three days of the month, collating the submissions and putting them all into a post. If you’re interested in hosting, please feel free to comment here, but also email me, so I have your contact details and can keep track more readily.
4. Submit some posts for the inaugural carnival! Deadline : 31st May.
[Note: this is the first time I've used blogcarnival.com for anything other than submissions. It doesn't seem to yet be registering the first deadline - it might just be taking time to process. Please let me know if it keeps playing up.]

And edited again to add: the logo might not be in its final form, so if you’re going to use it, feel please free to hotlink instead of copying it to your own server. Then your readers will automatically get any updates.

Is there someone with more image-fu than I who could do something nice with the concept? Roundy edges, drop-shadows, whatever. Or anyone have any other ideas?

Good for you – I’ll be there! Don’t know ANYTHING about setting alerts though…
Oh, I just meant that if you use a calendar programme, set it to beep you a couple of days before the end of each month, so you remember to submit an article or three to the carnival. (I suppose you could use a mobile phone to do this, or whatever.) Or you could – gasp – write it in your paper diary.
Please be eclectic in your submissions; I don’t see this as purely a collection of long, thinky, explicitly political posts, though of course they’re terrific. Quick hit images, personal-is-political anecdotes, everything is welcome.
I’m glad you finally got around to doing this – drawing up a CFS had been on my to-do list for weeks, but I’d been really busy and forgot.
I’m happy to host a future edition though – and I promise I won’t be as lazy next time around!

Excellent! Can I put you down for the July edition (published in the first week of August)?
Speaking of submission requirements, there are probably some that I just took for granted, but that should perhaps be spelt out. Things like: submissions that are just people splogging their ebooks aren’t going in.
And hosts are under no obligation to accept submissions that they don’t feel comfortable hosting/linking to – please feel free to use your own discretion. It’s your space, and hosting a carnival doesn’t change that.
