    I’m gonna do it.

    I’m gonna admit it.

    Usually, I hate these things.

But this one? … This one is funny.

  4. WTF?

The derogatory use of the word “gay” is not cool, nor is it remotely amusing. I was shocked and disgusted when I first viewed this over at icanhascheezburger.com, and now I’m beyond disbelief to find it here.

    @ WTF?:

Who is using “gay” derogatively in the above? It’s in the words of the original carol, written back when “gay apparel” just meant putting on your festival clothes.

Don’t fall into the trap of viewing every usage of a word through a modern lens.

Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
‘Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our gay apparel,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Toll the ancient Yule tide carol,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

See the blazing Yule before us,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Strike the harp and join the chorus.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
    Follow me in merry measure,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
While I tell of Yule tide treasure,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Fast away the old year passes,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
    Sing we joyous, all together,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Heedless of the wind and weather,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Ah, apologies. It didn’t occur to me at the time that the phrase “gay apparel” is a part of the original lyrics. The double meaning still troubles me somewhat and I only hope the creator of this particular lolcat didn’t intend multiple interpretations.

I don’t think they would have WTF?, off hand I can’t think of any other familiar Xmas carols that talk about dressing up so I think this was probably the obvious choice of carol.

Is probably trying to remember what she did to ‘earn’ the beads. The New Orleans tradition is that women are given the beads by male admirers – usually for flashing onlookers from balconys. I think the small beads are for flashing top half, big beads for flashing bottom half.
