Helen writes at the Cast Iron Balcony. She’s a blogger, she’s a grinner, she’s a mother, she’s a sinner. She plays her music in the sun. Last year, some cartoons which appeared with two of Miranda Devine‘s articles caught my attention. One article (they’re both in the SMH, as always) is about feminists – they all hated Sarah Palin ‘cos… Read more →
Further to our thread on the Maternity Services Review, check out ABC Unleashed: Homebirth ban, by Alison Leemen The Maternity Services Review report, released last weekend, was an attempt to delivery continuity of care and midwife-led services to more Australian women. In so doing, it has stripped that very same care and service from the only women who currently have… Read more →

Today’s Friday Hoyden is by guest Hoyden Chally from Zero At The Bone. Chally’s ode to Octavia Butler was first published here, and is also being discussed at io9. Chally is a scary feminist whose hobbies include French knitting, eating cheesecake and watching Doctor Who. What to say about Octavia Butler? I wish I’d known of her while she was… Read more →
A new meme! Using one of the tips from this handy Lifehacker post (Top 10 Obscure Google Search Tricks – it’s recommended as a way to find music/movies etc that you might like based on a musician/film you already like) I plugged in a few different search terms to Google to see what came up (although as I am a poliblogger with a shriveled husk of a heart, I tweaked the search in order to more likely find the pol-abuse) .

but I clicked onto Sam de Brito’s blog anyway because I was bored. I skipped the whole ‘fat bottom’ thing and went to look at the post with the piccy of Julia Gillard (our deputy PM for our OS readers). Apparently Sam has had some great female bosses. Lucky him. However, the venom about women in charge really starts to… Read more →

Via commenter Fem at Ideologically Impure comes this rape story out of New Zealand. It’s hardly original, but it is an exemplar of the genre. Warm up your Rape Apologist Bingo cards (I think credit should go to Shakesville for this, but I can’t find the original). This one’s heavy on the top left hand corner. [Possible trigger warning: single-line… Read more →
I don’t believe you’ve met my young friend Ace, an expert in calorification, incineration, carbonization, and inflammation.
-The Doctor, The Happiness Patrol
Dorothy McShane of Perivale, UK, better known as Ace, was the Doctor’s companion in Doctor Who from 1987 until the show’s cancellation in 1989. She was young. She was independent. She was tough. She was smart. She was a glorious feminist character.
Sorry all – supervising and exhorting a teen feeling horribly overwhelmed by Year 10 homework is currently consuming most of the time I would otherwise use for blogging. Just put a post up at FF101 though in response to a reader question: How is asking the question “Why are there no fat elves in Dungeons and Dragons?” offensive to feminists?… Read more →
I read this article in The West a little while ago, and it hit my bad-science peeve button. “Half of WA women drink throughout pregnancy“. This beat-up is certainly not alone in drawing conclusions that do not follow from the data, but it’s a particularly egregious example. The newspaper reports on a study that looked at data from the Western… Read more →
He’s right – the Libs at the moment are just a total farce.
