Jeez. I didn’t know where this had come from until I saw the headline for a video news article on the SMH that the pope had said condoms won’t stop AIDS. (Obviously I’m not great at reading as I’d missed the ‘backstory’ link).

Well there’s no accounting for stupidity. If catholics or anybody choose to believe this guy over what science has shown, then its their life they’re risking. Maybe a religion could be voted for in this years darwin awards – for promoting the spread of a deadly disease that could wipe out swathes of its own converts?

Yes yes, its obscenely irresponsible for the catholic church to take this stance, but whoever said the church actually cares about the wellbeing of its own faithful – all churches are just businesses designed to make money and increase their numbers of converts – the catholics are obviously betting that the banning of condoms will lead to a net population gain, i.e. more will be born through lack of condom use than die from aids.

Surely no one thinks the church cares about anything more than the bottom line? If it was a moral entity it wouldn’t have covered up systematic child abuse for the past, oh I dont know, probably 2000 years????

The catholic church has been the single largest contributor to global misogyny, and this latest decree is just a overt attempt to keep women barefoot and pregant.

Sorry to all the converts out there, I dont mean to offend, but you’re all brainwashed.

I think 3 involves the harvest of souls. “Contraception mentality” – WTF? Does that involve close and careful consideration and thereby, the screening of unwise verbal ejaculations? It is to be recommended then. The pontiff should try it.

“Well there’s no accounting for stupidity. If catholics or anybody choose to believe this guy over what science has shown, then its their life they’re risking. ”

But it’s not stupidity, it’s a total lack of education, or any opportunity for education in many cases. If you’ve never been exposed to “what science has shown” then how are you expected, exactly, to know that the Pope’s wrong and you’re risking your life???

It’s one thing blaming educated people for their own “stupidity”, it’s entirely another to blame people who have never had access to educational opportunities for their own ignorance.

“all churches are just businesses designed to make money and increase their numbers of converts”

And this is plain offensive. If you had any knowledge of the history of the Catholic church, you’d know that (a) it wasn’t designed, and (b) while an object of the church has frequently been to convert people, it was, for the most part, inspired by genuine faith and a wish to save the people they were converting.

Simplifying everything into teh church = teh bad money-hungry woman haters is simplistic at best. Not that I’m arguing with the woman-hating bit.

Here is the absolute crux of the left’s argument.
If they’re not prepared to do what the Roman Catholic Church instructs them, like not have sex with multiple partners, then why do you argue that the roman catholic church’s objection to condoms is having any effect at all on the number of condoms used? Surely a couple who are hell bent on shagging, against the “instructions” of the church, are hardly going to avoid using a condom because that’s against the “instructions” of the church.
There’s no logic in that argument.
If the church were to hand them condoms like they were confetti, then the people would not use them.

Charlie,

People are always going to want to shag. It’s fun and easy.

Condoms are a (minor) annoyance to use during sex. People are far less likely to use them if they think they are ineffective in preventing various sexual consequences, and they are also far less likely to use them if they think that they are morally wrong. The Pope has made both these claims.

Condoms are not a total answer to sexual hygiene or to contraception, but they are a major part of the toolkit. In populations with a high incidence of HIV/AIDS, they save lives – yet there are Catholic bishops and priests out there telling women whose husbands are HIV+ that insisting he use a condom is morally wrong and that God and the Church will look after their orphans, so not to worry.

I’m still disgusted.

Yeah ok, good point. It is easy to take for granted the wonderful education I’ve recieved here in Oz. But I will say that I was a skeptic from a very early age (I was bullied by my sunday school teacher for asking too many questions, and decided not to go anymore), so I cannot understand how anyone can just accept wholeheartedly and uncritically the authority of, well, anyone! But thats just me.

If I said that wearing a helmet would not save your head in a motorcycle crash, or on a construction site, or if I said that wearing glasses doesn’t fix or prevent eye deformations, I would be considered at least stupid if not got “banned” from any media or public life. Why that doesn’t happen to this Hitlerjungen?
