One response to “Mabo – what it means, what it doesn’t mean”

I still remember many people, mostly of my parents’ generation concerned about their retirement, being very anxious about the whole “Mabo means they can take your backyard” canard being spun around the media in 1992. As time goes on and none of that has happened, the anxiety seems to have faded, but I don’t think that it’s because they understand the legislation any better – just that there haven’t been any horror stories and there’s always some other media beat up to worry about.

I’ll have to read more about the proposed leasing scheme in the NT. I know that if I were one of the indigenous peoples there I would certainly be highly wary of it.
