Let’s start with the basics: 2012 is a terrible movie. It’s unevenly-paced, based on shaky science and even shakier history, and is peopled by paper-thin stereotypes who barely bat an eyelash when everyone they know and love is crushed, burned, drowned or (on one memorable occasion) minced.
That said, 2012 is terrific fun, if you approach it in the right frame of mind. Stick with me and I’ll see if I can explain why.

Like Showgirls or Snakes On A Plane, 2012 is a solid gold guilty pleasure classic in the making. Glued together with impossible escapes and improbable coincidences it has the air of having been conceived as a scriptwriter’s drinking game that uses every disaster flick cliché ever coined.
Ooh, can’t wait to see that on free-to-air.
Actually, I await the inevitable 2012 drinking-game posts with a moderate degree of anticipation. I’m a sucker for film narrative cliché collections.

‘Shaky science’….ahahahaha there is no science.
At TAM7 Phil Plait gave a very amusing talk on the whole thing.

Then Amanda and I went to Sedona AZ, where there are whole shelves devoted to this particular end time. I even have a sticker in the kitchen with a kokopelli figure (don’t ask why) dancing around with the phrase
‘Party Like Its 2012′. Had to buy it.
That said I don’t mind a good everyone dies movie.
Saw this on the weekend – and really liked it. But then, I have a soft spot for end-of-the-world movies, and an even bigger soft spot for John Cusack. As a disaster film drinking game movie, this one takes top spot (from the rather terrible Deep Impact)
Unlike the reviewer, it seems, I didn’t see it for scientific or historical education.
