  • Disability is not your analogy
  • – “When people use ‘disability’ in that manner, (‘I’m really bad at cooking! It’s like a disability or something.’ ‘[Component of society] is [bad effects] to the extent that it’s like we’re all disabled.’) to me it conveys a good deal about how that person thinks of disability and the unthinking contempt with which they regard disabled people.”

Oh Athena – the comments! About whether they should be offended about cultural appropriation if the Aboriginal Elders write in English to the Russian ambassodor to make a complaint!

There’s a difference between folk dances and sacred tribal dances. Dances that once were sacred become simple folk traditions, sure – like Morris dances have. But that doesn’t mean that every sacred dance is just automatically up for grabs as a “folk” dance.

I think my ‘favourite’ quote was “We researched a lot of information on the Internet. It’s just from many thousands of years ago… “. We have both a) everything is true on the intarwebs! and b) what do you mean, living culture? in one glorious statement.

And if they needed a country-specific folk dance and really wanted an Australian one, they could have tried bush dancing. I’d like to see that tried as ice skating…
