Apparently Akerman was the first person to ever quote this alleged statement in 2006, yet because he alleged that it came from a 1994 book (in which the quote does not actually appear), the contrarians are all “why has it taken the Sir John Houghton 15 years to deny it?”.
The arithmetic skills, not so hot, are they?

I think this is more of a failure in logical reasoning.
Yes, I think you’re right – they’re so invested in defending all the contrarians of note who have uncritically used the fabricated quote that they’re simply not even reading the background facts carefully enough to absorb the timeline, let alone apply any logic to it.
