Yesterday went from really good and happy to just plain crap. I caught my unhusband trying to hide my mothers day present and so I got it early. He bought me the mulberry tree that I have wanted for so long even though he thinks they are the ugliest trees ever. After that wonderful moment my day was ruined when my son came home after playing at friends out to report he had just been called the n-word. He is only nine and it breaks my heart that he has to deal with this.

There has been an unexpected outbreak of WIN over at the Australian. Yes, I know, the Australian. The ALR “Pair of Ragged Claws” has published a long article by GG specifically in response to (and counter to) Louis Nowra’s sewer gas farts from the Monthly.

I got the idea for this piece when reading the media coverage of the book’s 40th birthday, including Louis Nowra‘s semi-notorious piece in The Monthly. I was struck by the fact that a lot of people were holding forth on the book, but not the woman who wrote it. So I contacted Germaine and asked if she would, and happily she said yes.

I’d be the first to say that GG has been a bit of a trollumnist in the last few years, but this article is the real thing. Read the whole thing here.

I love the way she completely ignores the Louis Nowra thing – completely. Ha!

I’m so sorry, Renee, and Renee’s lad.

Renee, that’s terrible. My love to you and your son.

My week has been good. I got a Nintendo DSi last Friday, and have been playing with it solidly for a week. Got two little programmes from the DSiWare shop, called Art Academy. Great little art programme for such a tiny, low-powered game machine. I think it’ll help me keep my stress levels down, and it gives me something to do if I’m having a high pain day and feel like painting. It really does feel like paint, probably more-so than either Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter.

Renee, that’s just horrible, I’m so sorry. But yay for the mulberry tree!

I’ve had a lazy day of lurking on the net, reading one of the Sookie Stackhouse books and watching a Harry Potter movie with the kids.

Oh, Renee, so awful :-( *hugs for you both*

I got surprising good news last night: I’ve been offered a postdoc in Austria, starting later this year and running for 9 months! I’m hoping this is the beginning of a pattern, because I’d really like to be able to keep doing my research, only with slightly better pay :-) I don’t think I’ve stopped dancing since I found out… well, maybe when I slept ;-)

    Hugs Renee and son.

Congratulations WP, sounds like great fun.

I got to meet Anna this week! *squeeeee* Too bad I’ll be moving from Halifax and thus any further hanging out will be curtailed =( Most everything large that I don’t want is gone, and tomorrow I’ll put everything I want in storage away (Anna’s keeping some stuff for me!!) and live in a near-empty apartment until Wednesday, when I give back my modem and stay at a friend’s place, for a morning flight out to the States on Thursday. And it’s traveling for the rest of the month. And then back to Nova Scotia and moving to Hamilton. And OMG.

Wow, WP, that’s wonderful news, congratulations.

I’m deep in rehearsals now, with a truly lovely bunch of students who seem willing to give anything a shot. Show goes up first week of June, for any hoydens who happen to be in Wellington.

I’m so sorry, Renee, that’s just rotten.

Oh Renee! :( :( I wish I had a magic ‘fix the world’ wand!

Just cooked my first batch of Lauredhel’s bread. It smells great. I’ll need to drop the temperature a bit, it seems that my oven is a touch enthusiastic at high temperatures, but still well edible. Roll on dinner!

I saw Naomi Wolfe give a speech last week. Pretty standard stuff, but I was still impressed to see such a important feminist.

@Jha It is my ambition one day to visit Nova Scotia. I have been saving for 5 years. Not for any reason, I just like the name.

I always wanted to go to Scandinavia, because it looked nice in the Norsca ads.

  15. fuckpoliteness

Haha. I always wanted one of those ludicrously deep bath-pools with a slippery slide into it because of the Imperial Leather ads…your goals are more achievable and eco-friendly Mindy.

My head is a little spinny at the moment. Have been working through the knowledge that I’m actually agorophobic (in the sense of anxiety, symptoms, anxiety about the symptoms, avoidant behaviour, obsessive thoughts etc) and have been working on identifying and changing the way that I think to stop the avoid-y stuff – cos you know I don’t *want* to be frightened of fun stuff. And all of a sudden from breaking up with TBO cos I had one foot in the past and one in the future, so none right here and now; thinking I was close to being fired and having an utter terror of singing in public, I find I’m relaxed and happy in my relationship, have been given a promotion (??) and am starting to sing in front of people…and enjoy it. Not like ‘Ta da: cured’ but finding some of the stuff available on agorophobia really really useful.

Yay FP. None of the ?? business. It was well earned and hard worked for, muchly deserved and probably long overdue too. So there.

  17. Mindy

Can’t sleep, Spaminator will eat me.

ETA: well that got through. What I was trying to say to FP was the the promotion was well deserved and probably long overdue, and yay to all the other stuff. I don’t tend to sing in front of other people because I sound like a cat being stepped on and people generally ask me to stop.

The comments on this blog are getting worse and worse, ‘can we root them after?’, there is cyber bullying with girls being named and shamed, and allot of disgusting stuff going on over there. They need to know it’s not okay.
