Whoydensday: Vale Nicholas Courtney (1929-2011)

Raise a glass tonight for Nicholas Courtney, who played UNIT’s Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge Stewart in Doctor Who, appearing with the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh Doctors, and also in a 2008 episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

He died last night. None of the news sites I’ve seen mention a cause of death, but I think we can presume that it was natural causes. More information here.

He will be missed and remembered fondly.

    There’s a part of me that wants my childhood favourites to live forever. I was always very fond of the Brig.

    I adored the Brigadier, and was always very happy when he was on Doctor Who. I coveted his knit wear also.

    I was truly saddened to hear about this. The Brigadier was one of my favourites because he grew and developed as the series went on.

    I hope they find a way to work the Brigadier’s funeral into the next season of Doctor Who (hell, what I’d really like is a Doctor Who/Sarah Jane special, where they find notes he’d compiled before his death on some threat, so he gets to help save the world one last time).
