Break the isolation, join the list

Unless you are studying at university or working in the women’s sector it can be very easy to feel like you are the last remaining feminist on the planet. Whole months will pass by without a single conversation about feminism. Nobody you meet will ever introduce themselves as a feminist. And all you will see of the topic in mainstream media are a bunch of click-bait opinion pieces telling you that feminists are loathsome and anyway, feminism is dead. (Then one day you will discover Internet feminism – hooray).

That sense of isolation drove my friend and I to start feminist discussion groups in our city and ultimately for me to start a feminist parenting blog. This same sense of isolation is behind a move by Catherine Andrews (a feminist in Mexico) and Ruwayda Mustafah (a feminist in the UK) to assemble an international twitter contact list of feminists. The purpose of the list is to promote communication between feminists and build our capacity for community and (cyber) activism , in addition to bridging some of the barriers between the continents. No more lonely feminists.

    Here’s a similar project:
    I like lists, aka uniting twitter feminists by location and interests from Philippa Willitts (F-Word Blog)

    anyone can add themselves, listing their twitter name under one or more of 144 (count ‘em!) interests, and there is a final option for people to add anything I have missed.

    I launched it yesterday evening, and in the first 3 hours, 150 feminists added themselves and found new people to follow. At the time of writing this, 238 people have filled out the form. So, if you are a feminist on twitter and want to find others who share your interest in everything from abortion rights to zines, fill out this form. I’ve been told it is very easy to fill out on a mobile phone, as well as a computer. Once you have done that, have a look at the resulting document to find other people.
