Sunday Singalong: Chicks on Speed

Here is Chicks on Speed with the ultimate anti-cock rock song; joyfully poking fun at the hyper-masculinity of the rock music scene and the way in which DIY punk-electronica is perceived as less than ‘real music’.

CoS is an art ‘project’ consisting of three women – one of them Australian, yay – specialising in home-made fashion (they create costumes out of plastic bags and gaffer tape), performance art (they once bartered an unopened love letter on the street), electroclash music and plain old art. They are mostly based in Berlin.

I’ve seen them perform a couple of times – they are wonderful. Once I saw them at a music festival where a boy jumped the fence to get into the festival for free. He ran right into the CoS crowd mid-session with an army of enormous security guards in hot pursuit. Take your shirt off we all yelled at him and he did and that was the end of the pursuit. Sweaty, half-naked boys in a CoS crowd? Dime a dozen.
