Frist? Goodness me. I had a long day out today at a mildly tedious seminar, in the middle of which I received some bad family news (which I plan to keep within the family, so please don’t ask), so I hope everybody else has had a better day than that.

So sorry to hear that TT, will be here with support and hugs as needed. We were out for a lot of the day, mostly trying to find a parking spot less than 200m from where we wanted to go, since it was pouring rain. Unfortunately everyone else had the same idea.
I’m sorry to hear that your day was so crappy as well, tigtog! Hopefully things will settle down for you soon.
I have a question, if someone doesn’t mind answering: where does the whole otterday thing come from? Why otters? (Other than the obvious gorgeousness that is them.)

I think Lauredhel will have to answer that one Jo. I can find a thread dating back to 2008 but no explanation of why otters, other than that Caturday was so last month (in 2008).

And Helen, it’s so very true. I am extremely troubled by the claims that get made for neuroscience (and sometimes by its practitioners), for lots of reasons – in fact, my current workplace is all about this concern!! Interesting, too, to think about how this is bound to research funding – after all, all funding applications tend to require you to explain why your research will CHANGE THE WORLD… it’s very easy to fall into this marketing way of talking about your own work (which personally I hate, partly because the things I really love about my work work are the least marketable, so they always wind up sliced and diced out)… But it also shapes how neuroscientists present their own work. I have lots more to say about this, but yeah…
Yesterday we had some audiologists come and give us free hearing tests. Turns out I have moderate hearing loss. It’s actually distressing me much more than I thought it would. Am pretty much convinced I have a brain tumor and will be dead and/or completely deaf and/or turn into my mother (who has 75% hearing loss) by the end of the week.
(((Hugs))) Amazing Kim. It is startling how a bit of health news can really throw you into a spin. Hope that you are able to get some reassurance soon about what you can and should do re your hearing.
