Frist? Goodness me. I had a long day out today at a mildly tedious seminar, in the middle of which I received some bad family news (which I plan to keep within the family, so please don’t ask), so I hope everybody else has had a better day than that.

    Hugs and vibes.

So sorry to hear that TT, will be here with support and hugs as needed. We were out for a lot of the day, mostly trying to find a parking spot less than 200m from where we wanted to go, since it was pouring rain. Unfortunately everyone else had the same idea.

I’m sorry to hear that your day was so crappy as well, tigtog! Hopefully things will settle down for you soon.

I have a question, if someone doesn’t mind answering: where does the whole otterday thing come from? Why otters? (Other than the obvious gorgeousness that is them.)

In news, I posted my first guest post this week! But you all knew that already :D

    First, ((((hugs)))) to TT.

Secondly: I was googling something and I came across this comment on LP from the commenter called “Conrad”, a few months ago, which really speaks to me after reading Cordelia Fine’s great takedown of “neurononsense” which is so rife in the media at the moment.

Being somebody that has published a few reasonably high impact papers in the area of cognitive neuroscience, I think I can reasonably say that almost all of the stuff ever published using fMRI and trying to link it to complex behavior (including my own work) is extremely speculative at best. What’s worse is that there are more ridiculous claims being made in that area of research than almost any other I can think of — which oddly enough the public loves to hear. It’s 21st century phrenology revisited unfortunately, with more marketing.

Twenty-first century phrenology with more marketing – nailed it.

    Thinking of you, Tigtog…

And Helen, it’s so very true. I am extremely troubled by the claims that get made for neuroscience (and sometimes by its practitioners), for lots of reasons – in fact, my current workplace is all about this concern!! Interesting, too, to think about how this is bound to research funding – after all, all funding applications tend to require you to explain why your research will CHANGE THE WORLD… it’s very easy to fall into this marketing way of talking about your own work (which personally I hate, partly because the things I really love about my work work are the least marketable, so they always wind up sliced and diced out)… But it also shapes how neuroscientists present their own work. I have lots more to say about this, but yeah…

  7. The Amazing Kim

Yesterday we had some audiologists come and give us free hearing tests. Turns out I have moderate hearing loss. It’s actually distressing me much more than I thought it would. Am pretty much convinced I have a brain tumor and will be dead and/or completely deaf and/or turn into my mother (who has 75% hearing loss) by the end of the week.

(((Hugs))) Amazing Kim. It is startling how a bit of health news can really throw you into a spin. Hope that you are able to get some reassurance soon about what you can and should do re your hearing.

Vent from elsewhere: can I just say how very much I am over arsehats who just want to drop comments on the most recent thread on a blog instead of looking for one that’s on topic? They almost always start with

I don’t know whether this is [thread-topic] enough, but I just wanted to say…

    Sassafrassing varmints.
