Hey, are you a woman? Are you also an Atheist, Freethinker, Humanist, Rationalist, Secularist, Agnostic, Non-religious and/or Otherwise-identifying non-believer?
If so, have you already added your relevant details (just a few simple demographic datapoints on nationality, religious background, gender, education level etc) to the Atheist Census Online? Because if you haven’t, I’m about to attempt to persuade you to do so.
Maybe you just don’t like online atheist stuff even though you may be the most atheist person you know. Who could blame you, frankly? Anyway, the census is short, sweet, and comments are not enabled, so there’s no possibility of getting sucked into a SIWOTI timesink just by answering the census questions.
Maybe this is the first time you’ve heard of it. I hadn’t heard of it until a few weeks ago, and I only just added my details to the database. As to why I didn’t do it immediately, it’s because my first reaction was quite strongly meh, online poll. This one is better than most, because they do send a verification email before adding your details to the database, but of course (a) I didn’t know that until I actually went to the website and answered the demographic questions; and (b) this verification system could still be gamed by anyone who has access to more than one email address and wanted to, for any reason, inflate the numbers for certain demographics.
Why might anybody want to do that, you may well ask? Because of how artificially inflating the representation of certain demographics can be used politically to minimise the concerns expressed by some members of other demographics.
Why do I mention this as a possibility? Because I’m seeing it play out in the comment sections of pro-feminist atheist/skeptic blogs right now – anti-feminist contrarians are using the current gender breakdown on the Atheist Census (as of writing it’s just over 25% women) to argue that this “proves” that women just aren’t as interested in atheism etc as men are, and therefore any disparity in female representation at any and all levels of involvement is just a reflection of the movement being “naturally” more of a “guy thing”, since there’s obviously no barriers preventing women clicking a few boxes on a website (that’s just how things are, move along, nothing to see here, we don’t need no stinking anti-harassment or diversity policies, nosirree).
So I say, even though it is just another unscientific internet poll, it’s important to stand up and be counted on this one. Please consider adding your datapoints, and please pass this link on to other non-believing women.
