Media Circus: read my memoirs edition

What do I want from #respill today? Another hung parliament, please

What do I want from #respill today? Another hung parliament, please

By tigtog on February 27, 2012

For the last two decades of Federal and State elections, I have been voting strategically for a hung parliament (in both Houses) every time. In 2010, enough of my fellow citizens did the same that a hung Federal parliament was finally what we got.

Neoliberal welfare and gender inequality

Neoliberal welfare and gender inequality

By Wildly Parenthetical on May 8, 2011

I suppose that by now, everyone in Australia has probably come across some version of the latest iteration of the hatin’-on-teen-mums discourse, which comes up with frightening regularity. This version of course, is part of the ‘tough love’ strategy being used by the Goverment, allegedly to get us back to surplus. There’s an extraordinary array [...]

Guy Barnett pushing another punitive bill amendment on abortion

By tigtog on September 3, 2008

LABOR MPs will get a conscience vote on a controversial push to scrap Medicare funding for abortions in Australia for women who are more than 14 weeks pregnant. [link] The ALP’s national executive committee has confirmed it will recommend that Labor MPs and senators be offered a conscience vote on a disallowance motion pushing for [...]

The Poison Dwarf scrapes the barrel: now a comedy act is a “sex storm”

By tigtog on May 26, 2008

He’s trying to manufacture a scandal over the fact that the ALP candidate for the upcoming by-election for the seat of Gippsland did, as part of his duties as a cultural festival organiser in the region last year, support and promote a show for the festival fringe which featured a comedy musical act called The [...]

“Civil liberties advocates = paedophiles”: Internet culture wars from the ALP.

By Lauredhel on January 1, 2008

The ABC reports on Conroy’s internet filtering bluster. He uses exactly the same discourse strategy as used by half-wit anti civil liberties debaters everywhere: “Well if you don’t like it, YOU must be a pedo then! Eh? Eh? You like little girls, eh? Nudge nudge?” Sue Gordon, on the post-”Little Children Are Sacred” NT intervention, [...]

Creaky feminist gorgons, unite

By Lauredhel on December 15, 2007

We at Hoyden About Town have been tickled pink that Julia Gillard is our new second-in-command. Reviled by the now-Opposition for being “deliberately barren”, Gillard’s body, looks and fertility choices have been scrutinised and dissected by the media at least as much as her policies and competencies have been examined. So fertility-fetishist culture warrior Angela [...]
