Three Examples of Rape Culture in Nice Guy(tm) Breast Cancer Activism

By Lauredhel on December 13, 2009

I thought the BoobyWall was objectifying and tacky. I thought “Save the Ta-Tas” was dehumanising, and missed the point badly. I thought the “every mouthful” nipple-water-bottles were eyeroll-worthy. I thought that instructing us that if only cismen had boobs, they’d look after them better was disparaging and rude. I thought “Save Second Base” was creepy, [...]

Gone too far?

By Lauredhel on June 25, 2009

Those who think that society has “gone too far” in supporting breastfeeding, that mothers who formula feed are demonised and breastfeeding mothers aren’t: Show me the women who are losing their jobs for formula feeding. Show me the women who are being kicked out of restaurants, swimming pools, gyms, childcare centres, and airplanes for formula [...]

“Prehistoric pin-up”? Paleolithic fertility carving dubbed “pornography”

By Lauredhel on May 14, 2009

The back-slapping homosocial bonding continues. This time, it’s over a Palaeolithic sculpture. You heard right. This Aurignacian mammoth-ivory carving has been found in Germany by Nicholas Conard, and published in a letter to Nature. It’s thought to be the oldest human figurative art known to us. The life-giving breasts and vulva are particularly prominent, reminiscent [...]

Some women are afraid of being mummy-tracked; others are afraid of being fired.

By Lauredhel on March 6, 2009

One of the ways of starkly illustrating an aspect of the gender divide is DeBecker’s quote: “At core, men are afraid women will laugh at them, while at core, women are afraid men will kill them.” I think there’s a class and mothering parallel here: Middle-class women are afraid of being mummy-tracked; working-class women are [...]

Antibreastfeeding Bingo

By Lauredhel on February 20, 2009

We’ve done the other Bingos, and this one’s long overdue. With a nod to all the misogynist trolls out there who’ve provided the material for this card, I present: Antibreastfeeding Bingo! It’s focussed on public breastfeeding conversations, not “mommy wars” type conversations, which are well covered by the Bingo at Mom’s Tinfoil Hat, and by [...]

Faves: Bodies, Breasts ‘n’ Birth edition

By Lauredhel on January 3, 2009

Hoyden About Town is looking forward to the finalist voting in the 2008 Weblog Awards. Because it’s school holidays and tigtog and I are family-focussed right now, I’ve put together a few of my posts from the past, in the categories Feminism, Breasts, bodies and birth, Bad science, Big pharma, and Disability. They’re not chosen for any strict criteria – just the posts I found memorable, the ones linked a lot, the ones that attracted lots of comments. I’m not sure whether tigtog will find time to do the same (but I hope so!) This should be fun for relative newcomers to Hoyden About Town as well as for people cruising the Weblog Awards nominees.

If you have a favourite Hoyden post, do please feel free to add it in comments for the appropriate category. Enjoy.

Salma Hayek “still” breastfeeding – world can’t decide whether to jerk off or prosecute

By Lauredhel on November 12, 2008

This is a montage of images from hyperventilating stories about Salma Hayek “Still”! Breastfeeding! At! 13! Months! The world has burst into a babblefest of gossip about how bizarre this is. There has been an outpouring of shock and disdain, complete with accusations of perversity and child sexual abuse. Here’s a sampling of the buzz. [...]

“Bring breast awareness back to the workplace”

By Lauredhel on September 19, 2008

Remember Rethink? With all their huh-huh-boobies advertisements? Rethink, who thinks that the main focus of “breast cancer awareness” should be sexualised breasts and men? They’re at it again. This time, they’re exhorting us to “Bring breast awareness back into the workplace“. Cheers, I’m just fine without. Whose brilliant idea was this? Sexual harassment jokes – [...]

For those who followed the Norks Thread of Doom

By Lauredhel on August 31, 2008

Those who followed the Norks Thread of Doom on LP might appreciate this amazing poem by Karen Healey. Karen was asked this by some creep who reads her blog: I am apologizing to you in advance if you find the following statement to be offensive,or sexist Ms. Healey – I would like to know more [...]

Ksubi topless party

By Guest Hoyden on August 19, 2008

This guest post is from Mindy, a regular commentor here and a contributor to the For Battle! group blog. It’s not often that I applaud the actions of a brewery, but in this case Fosters deserves a mention for taking a principled stand against the antics of Ksubi, an Australian men’s fashion design house. Fosters [...]

“Open Source Boob Project”: Around the blogs

By Lauredhel on April 24, 2008

The Open Source Boob Project is demanding a round-up. I’ve tried to make this a fair portrayal of the buzz around the web. Original post by The Ferrett Not everyone wants to go public with it, and what happens at the con stays at the con. But trust me. If you are, and I meet [...]

“The Open-Source Boob Project”

By Lauredhel on April 23, 2008

This is just a post full of shameless feminist fangirling about machineplay on LJ. You may have heard by now about the Heinlein-lovin’ dude who thinks he invented objectification and groping at Penguicon, and who stormed out of his con into the world to spread the word. theferret’s original post is here. Edit 24 Apr [...]

“It is a great mistake to allow the girl to attend lectures …”

By Lauredhel on February 29, 2008

Remember the Ladies’ Handbook of Home Treatment? It’s baaaack! For Teh Portly Dyke, I present: “On The Threshold of Womanhood: Puberty, or Adolescence”. A careful explanation of a mother’s responsibility to guide and manage her daughter’s fragile pubertal state, so that she may be properly transformed into a useful, submissive, God-fearing housework and baby machine.
