Happy Birthday, Sesame Street

By Beppie on November 11, 2009

As you may have noticed if you’ve used Google recently, this week marks the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street, an educational children’s show that has always attempted to be promote diversity and understanding. While it has not always been perfect — most of the Muppets, unfortunately, are still gendered as male by default — it [...]

We are dying

By Lauredhel on August 11, 2009

We are dying, and apparently it’s our own damn fault. As pointed to by Deborah in the latest Otterday thread, scooter users in Australia are dying. We are dying because footpaths obstructed by cars and tree prunings and rubbish force us onto the road. We are dying because there are no footpaths. We are dying [...]

SchoolHolidayBlogging: SCIENCE!

By Lauredhel on July 20, 2009

Oh, I luff him. And I luff his sense of wonder, of infinite possibilities. The Lad, age six, has just hatched one of these Growing Lizard Egg Pets, which he bought with five dollars of his pocket money on an outing at the Gingin Gravity Discovery Centre. We submerged it in a bowl of water, [...]

Missing The Point Awards, Manchester poster edition

By Lauredhel on May 22, 2009

There’s a new advertising poster up in Manchester, and the country is abuzz. Here are some excerpts from the complaints: …disgusting… …The picture is shocking and it isn’t normal… …highly offensive… …exploitation… … the sort of picture that a paedophile would show a kid… …poison their minds… …sexualising of children… …wrong… …depraved… …just offensive… …such [...]

Quickhit: “The wages of atheism”.

By Lauredhel on April 10, 2009

By In A Strange Land: When our daughters chose to opt out of the god-botherers preaching about sky fairies (Miss Ten’s words, not mine) at school, just before Easter, they were sent to pick up litter in the school grounds instead. This is on my mind, because my kid came home from State school with [...]

That Ms. Cover

That Ms. Cover

By tigtog on January 27, 2009

As no doubt the editors hoped, this cover for Ms. Magazine’s Special Inaugural Issue has generated a lot of controversy. Many feminists feel that Obama’s feminist credentials are not nearly as strong as they could be, while the cover has generated an escalation in panic-mongering and shrill we-told-you-so’s from the religious right plus a great deal more snark about Obamessianic visions and rainbow unicorns from the neocon right.

Quickhit: Sexist men get paid more

By tigtog on September 23, 2008

So, this has been covered on a few feminist blogs – a recent study has shown that men with “traditional” gender attitudes get paid significantly more than not only women, but also get paid more than men with more egalitarian gender attitudes. Women with more egalitarian gender attitudes are paid a little more than women [...]

US Republican Party feud against UN conventions for the rights of women and children

By Lauredhel on September 8, 2008

Shakesville has a post up pointing to the official GOP policy platform site, www.gopplatform2008.com. The Republican Party platform includes the following: We strongly support the long-held policy of the Republican Party known as the “Mexico City policy,” which prohibits federal monies from being given to non-governmental organizations that provide abortions or actively promote abortion as [...]

Who made the seeds?

By Lauredhel on January 4, 2008

[image source] We were examining seedless grapes after dinner, biting them in half to see what they look like inside, holding them up to light to examine the veining, peeling the skin off with our teeth. We noticed that they were seedless, then started wondering how they grew new seedless grape vines, if there were [...]
