While Ruth Hershberger's critique is still among the most radical challenges to the conventional male wisdom of sociobiology, it was not sufficient in its time to call the whole area into disrepute or to pre-empt it from continuing to expand. Viola Klein argued for the necessity of examining the conditions under which theories are produced, for accounting for the theorist, but we must also examine the conditions under which theories are received, and account for the critics.
