Homophobia and racism: the Australian media prove they can do two things at once

Homophobia and racism: the Australian media prove they can do two things at once

By Chally on December 6, 2011

There was a bit of a controversy on Sunday when The Daily Telegraph, which is apparently still passing for a newspaper, put up a story called “PM Julia Gillard and Senator Pansy Wong – a reluctant embrace of an emotive issue; gay marriage”. Here’s the story in question. Let’s be very kind and move past [...]

By Chally on October 3, 2011

Remember how I wrote a post about the experiences of filming an ad advocating marriage equality the other day? Well, it’s out now from the good people at the I Do campaign. It features Mim, her family, and me, if you can spot us!

Hoydens About Town Hall

Hoydens About Town Hall

By Chally on September 25, 2011

Mim, her daughter, her mother, and I spent a very, very, very long afternoon filming a new ad advocating same-sex marriage with Australian Marriage Equality and GetUp!. Let me tell you all about it. The organisers had kept the specifics well under wraps, only telling us to wear jeans and red or white shirts, and [...]

Femmostroppo Reader February 3, 2011

By tigtog on February 3, 2011

Items of interest come across recently in my feed-reader. I deliberately didn’t link to lots of coverage of Australian natural disasters or the Egyptian uprisings, because there’s just so much to sort through. What else did I miss? Leave your own interesting links in comments.

BFTP: Slash and Teh Magick Testicles of Perspicacity

BFTP: Slash and Teh Magick Testicles of Perspicacity

By Lauredhel on January 20, 2011

Like all good evolutionary psychologists who focus on gender, Don hasn’t bothered to talk to any actual *whispers* women. Especially not to any women who write and/or study this, erm, *whispers* smut. Because women can’t define their own experience, can’t tell their own stories, can’t have any useful insights into their own motivations. Because women’s fan academia doesn’t really exist in any meaningful sense, not until chest-beaters come along and put their stamp of Knowledge onto it. Because women’s culture is there to be picked apart with tweezers and analysed with a touch of distanced fascination, a modicum of distaste, and a whopping serve of wilful ignorance. For lo, he has Teh Magick Testicles of Perspicacity. Here, let him show you them.

Waiting for Mr Right or taking Mr He’ll do?

By Mindy on January 28, 2010

Women who have failed to find their perfect partner by the age of 30 should give up their search for Mr Right and settle instead for Mr Right Now, an American author has claimed. Older, single women often deny themselves any chance of finding happiness by failing to downgrade their expectations, says author Lori Gottlieb. [...]

Slash and Teh Magick Testicles of Perspicacity

By Lauredhel on May 5, 2009

Via glandujakiss and sqbr. You don’t even have to know anything about slash to get a few giggles and more than a few eyerolls out of this interview with evolutionary psychologist Don Symons, author of Warrior Lovers: Erotic Fiction, Evolution and Female Sexuality [eta: see comments 1 & 2]. Like all good evolutionary psychologists who [...]

Quickhit: Bettina Arndt, rape cheerleader

By Lauredhel on March 1, 2009

Sydney Morning Herald: “Women should say yes, yes, yes more” Forty years after liberated women felt able to say “no” to their partners’ demands for sex, they have been urged to say “yes” more often to keep their men happy. Sex therapist and psychologist Bettina Arndt said different libidos were creating a generation of men [...]

Friday Hoyden: The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet

By tigtog on December 27, 2008

I’ve just read this book (which my kids “chose” for me as a prezzie), penned by the redoubtable Colleen McCullough. In it she examines the life of the Bennet sisters twenty years after the events of Pride and Prejudice, especially what happens to Mary after long years of spinsterly duty to her querulous mother are [...]
