Media Circus: Island prisons

Media Circus: Island prisons

Media Circus: asylum seeker impasse

Media Circus: asylum seeker impasse

By tigtog on June 29, 2012

Everything about the way that our pundits are demonising boat-arriving asylum seekers while pumping out crocodile tears over drowned families is disingenuous, the way that most of our politicians are pandering to them is despicable, and the debate this week is framed around not even asking the right questions. Please share your bouquets and brickbats for particular items in the mass media, or highlight cogent analysis elsewhere, on any current sociopolitical issue.

The callous cruelty of mandatory detention of asylum seekers

The callous cruelty of mandatory detention of asylum seekers

By tigtog on September 21, 2010

On this day after a detained asylum seeker threw himself off a detention centre roof to his death rather than be deported back to persecution in Fiji, this terrible yet fantastic post from Pamela Curr at the Drum should be required reading for all Australians with a social conscience:

More language nitpicking

By tigtog on September 17, 2009

I’ve decided that from now on I will refer to “unauthorised immigrants” rather than be complicit in the framing of these people as “illegal”. There is a huge difference between unauthorised activities and illegal activities,

Severely injured asylum seekers and the right to privacy

By Lauredhel on April 19, 2009

As Aussies probably know, folks on a boat were rescued by the Navy up off Ashmore Reef this week, after their boat caught fire. The origin of the fire is a matter of some dispute. The Liberal (conservative) Premier of WA, Colin Barnett, immediately said that the asylum seekers deliberately doused it in petrol set [...]

It’s a start

By tigtog on December 11, 2007

The Howard refugee policy is going to be partially dismantled by the new Labor government. The detention centre on Nauru will be closed, and the refugees (a few from Myanmar and many from Sri Lanka) currently held there will have their processing sped up and most will shortly be settled on our mainland. It’s not [...]
