Queuejumping rhetoric a new low in fight against reproductive rights

By tigtog on May 1, 2013

the Member for Dawson said priority should be given to other drugs, particularly those that helped cancer patients and extended the lives of people who were sick.

“I simply don’t understand why this particular drug would find its way to the head of the queue before those drugs,” Mr Christensen told the Daily Mercury.

Tony Abbott "NOPE" poster

Surprise, surprise – Lindsay Foyle reports threats from Tony Abbott too

By tigtog on September 14, 2012

This late-1970s attempt at intimidation was witnessed by a bunch of other journalists working for The Bulletin at the time. Yeah, the idea that Abbott could have punched the wall beside a woman’s head to intimidate her as his political rival just seems soooo unlikely, amirite?

The rise of fetal personhood notions in WA politics

The rise of fetal personhood notions in WA politics

By Lauredhel on February 27, 2012

Things are not looking great in Western Australia for the rights of pregnant people at the moment. Yesterday we had this: Unborn babies given recognition in new laws Causing the death of an unborn child will be viewed similar to murder by courts as part of new laws the state government wants to bring in.[…] [...]

Quicklink: “an abrogation of medical ethics, if not common decency”

By tigtog on February 19, 2012

Under the new legislation, women who want an abortion will be forcibly penetrated for no medical reason. Where’s the outrage?

Susan G Komen Foundation Follows Pro-Life Line; Stops Contributing to Planned Parenthood

By tigtog on February 1, 2012

Yet again, the pro-life movement betrays its classism – forget all those other reproductive health care services Planned Parenthood provides – services that help poor women survive and thrive in pregnancy and birthing, and that keep them healthy to raise their children.

Repost: Nice Guys (TM) redux and what makes an ideal husband and father

Repost: Nice Guys (TM) redux and what makes an ideal husband and father

By tigtog on September 19, 2011

Colour us as unreasonably demanding, but women do tend to want a little bit more than a guy who simply refrains from being nasty like it’s some great sacrifice (which implies that he might just stop refraining from being nasty if he doesn’t feel appreciated enough, so watch it).

BFTP: Parenting While Female: “It’s Not About You”

BFTP: Parenting While Female: “It’s Not About You”

By Lauredhel on December 21, 2010

This is part of our December slowdown Blast From The Past reposting program. This post was originally published May 2nd, 2007.

I’ve been contemplating this post: The Male Gaze… falls upon a Nursing Mother…. by Morgan Gallagher. I think there’s an important truth in there, something feminists find themselves saying over and over and over again: “It’s not about you.”

Blogging for Choice: Trusting Women

By tigtog on January 23, 2010

Choice here is not just about the choice to terminate an unwanted or unsafe pregnancy. It is also about the choice to continue a pregnancy when others would rather that you did not (a situation that many disabled women in particular find themselves in). It is also about the choice to raise or relinquish the child once it has been born.

Women’s health: Are we taking a risk by dumping the Democrats?

By Lauredhel on December 13, 2007

The MJA this month also brings us Mary Lander’s story: “The fight for a life-saving drug: a personal perspective”. Mary Lander has a relentlessly-growing meningioma adjacent to her brainstem. This is a non-cancerous tumour of the lining of the brain. She has already suffered a hearing loss, and the tumour involves three facial nerves and [...]
