River Tam in the episode "Objects in Space"

Friday Hoydens: Women of Firefly

By Orlando on July 20, 2012

Zoe, Kaylee, River and Inara. The four graces. Different talents, different struggles, different features, different life experiences. Same life-affirming energy. I wish we could have heard more of their stories, and maybe one day I will get around to reading all the slash fiction. I don’t have time today to write as I should in [...]

Outland Open Thread: Episodes 1 and 2

By Beppie on February 15, 2012

Last week saw the premiere of a new Australian comedy, Outland, penned by John Richards and Adam Richard, which focuses on the lives of a club for gay sci-fi geeks (or “science fiction enthusiast homosexualists” as club member Rae would prefer).

Hugo Awards

Hugo Awards

By Lauredhel on April 27, 2011

The Hugo nominations are out! The full list is below.

Any favourites? Any surprises? Any rejoicing at the rather marvellous gender balance? (Is this the first time with this many women? Has anyone done the maths? And check out that Best Novel category!) Any unrejoicing about the lack of racial balance (I think, and project from past experience; for many of these authors, I don’t know how they identify when it comes to race.) Other comments? What category are you watching the closest?

This is a repost: originally published in December 2005 at my original tigtogblog (later imported here to HaT) – I’d only been blogging for a few months.

Is Vorkosigan as nasty as I love Lucy?

By tigtog on December 21, 2005

In a fascinating thread over at Pandagon riffing off a post by Twisty, the comments thread drifted away from Lucy to other fictinal characters, and of course we eventually ended up in SF (as all righteous geeks must regularly do), where first Lois McMaster Bujold was swiped for her worlds by nolo (“why does every [...]
