is what noted skeptical humanist, Kurt Vonnegut, wanted us all to say on his death, with a wry smile of unbelief. I don’t know much more to say than that, which is why I haven’t said anything for days since he died. I’ve read some of his short story collections, and loved the quirks of his narrativium, but I’ve never… Read more →

Pavlov’s Cat has an excellent post that lays out clearly and simply why attempting to shoehorn the complexity of educating children into some objective scale to grade teachers and pay them accordingly is ideology gone wild. Chris Clarke has posted a fabulous thing: How To Not Be an Asshole – A Guide For Men A long way into the very long thread which ensued, a regular antifeminist commenter, Infidel Sage, wrote: We eagerly await the companion guide to this for women. This is why we are content to celebrate a global festival of renewal and new life in the southern autumn, instead of in the spring. My heart feels buoyant. And this is why: Fresh, lush, beautiful rain on the strawberry leaves. Fresh, lush, beautiful rain everywhere. Today, it rained. And rained, and rained, and rained. Our strawberry patch somehow survived… Read more →
Edit 18 Dec 2009: I’ve seen this referred to in quite a few places round the ‘sphere as “Antifeminist Troll Bingo”. It’s not called that here, and was never called that here, because that isn’t my sole or primary intention. Many of these statements are made not by people just stirring crap in the hope of provoking a reaction; they’re… Read more →
It’s always been my philosophy to provide both my kids with a comprehensive sexual health and safety education to supplement the already good school program in NSW. My parents did that for me, and it made me confident about demanding conversations about contraception when required, etc. It’s a good thing. But it was a lot easier when they were younger… Read more →

Kos thinks women (well, specifically Kathy Sierra) whine unjustifiably about being harassed online, which is not a big deal, apparently. Bitch PhD explains to him that he is being an arse, as do quite a few Kossacks. Kos and Bitch are both right about the unpracticability of some universal blog civility code, as I ranted about a bit in the… Read more →
While I applaud the sentiment of those advocating a formal bloggers’ code of conduct, I think their approach is ultimately doomed to failure.
The sharp-eyed amongst you will have noticed some slight changes to the links in the banner/header of the blog. This is mostly just reorganisation of existing material, but I’d hate any of you to miss out on the recently added “About Lauredhel: a FAQ” subpage linked to from the “About the Hoydens” page. I’ve begun a side venture for feminist discussion, loosely affiliated with Finally, A Feminism 101 Blog, for those readers so inclined. Seeing as how bloggers aren’t always posting on the issues you wish to discuss, and some folks really don’t like commenting on blogs anyhow, I’ve set up a mailing list for feminists and feminist-friendly posters only. The advantages are… Read more →
