Chutzpah of the Day: Field and Game Australia edition
Field and Game Australia’s Rod Drew said protesters should be investigated over the incident. He said it could be more than just a coincidence that the slaughter happened on the year that duck protesters had been sitting for firearm and game licence tests. He said the protesters could have shot the ducks ”to bring the [...]
Today in WTF is the Gillard govt thinking?
Handing the current Federal environmental oversight and protection powers to the State Premiers? If it weren’t for the protection of the Federal government, we would have lost places like the Great Barrier Reef, the Franklin River, the Daintree Rainforest and Fraser Island a long time ago.
Does Keynes still have the secret to happiness? And even for parents?
You must read this wonderful essay in aeon magazine from economist, John Quiggin – “The Golden Age: The 15-hour working week predicted by Keynes may soon be within our grasp – but are we ready for freedom from toil”. Quiggin takes Keynes’ theory and in this essay fixes up some of the old oversights by [...]
Heroic women: Grans lock on
VicForests has been clearfelling coupes near Toolangi (Mt St Leonard) in the Central Highlands of Victoria. This cool temperate rainforest is part of the tiny remnant which remains to us in this, the most cleared State in Australia. It’s the habitat of the increasingly rare Leadbeater’s Possum, our State emblem – evidently the Victorian Government [...]
To Save Some Species, Zoos Must Let Others Die
Sobering article from the NYT, as part of their new series The Animal Lifeboat: A Conservation Dilemma: zookeepers are increasingly being pressed into making cold calculations about which animals are the most crucial to save.
A poster appearing around Brisbane
Text from the spoof newspaper article poster that has started anonymously appearing around Brisbane, Queensland: DEMOLITION WILL HONOUR SIR JOH BEJELKE-PETERSEN An unnamed source within the Brisbane electorate today accused Queensland Premier Campbell Newman’s LNP government of secretly planning the demolition of the new Cloudland. The destruction of this venue would be seen by [...]

Reminder: 9 of the 10 hottest years on record occurred since the year 2000
And that’s just one of the datasets supporting the fact that the planet’s climate is warming. The Bad Astronomer provides a case study of the tactics of climate change denial: it’s a textbook case of denialist sleight of hand, of distraction, distortion, error, and misdirection.
BFTP — Endangered Sunday: grey nurse shark
I’ve been in the water with a lot of sharks: leopard sharks, wobbegongs, Port Jackson sharks, grey and white tipped reef sharks and grey nurse sharks. What’s a scary thing I’ve encountered diving? That dreaded apex predatory homo sapiens. Homo sapiens is of course the big threat to today’s Endangered Sunday species, the grey nurse shark or carcharias taurus.
Durban: a modest agreement
Delegates agreed to start work next year on a new legally binding treaty to cut greenhouse gases to be decided by 2015 and to come into force by 2020.
Small (Environmental) Economies
I think that most of us here probably waste far more than we need to (I certainly do), but at the same time, most of us probably have our own little small personal economies to reduce waste, and it strikes me that sharing these with each other could be useful.
Carbon Price Legislation Passes Senate
Discuss.
Official tigtog position on this legislation: it’s a nice start, should have happened ages ago, bring on the MRRT.
What’s going on in the world?
So, as we’ve probably all noticed, Australian news is kind of… Australia-centric? I’m wondering what news stories you’ve been encountering that really should be getting wider coverage. Here are some of mine: After years of military dictatorship, Burma is on the verge of democratic reforms… or so it would seem, because the new civilian government, [...]
ObBloodOath post: entering Buffoon Central
After Tony Abbott’s “pledge of blood” response to the passing of the carbon price bill in Parliament yesterday, it seems that any minute now he’ll nudge over the line into full-blown WHARRGARBL* territory…
