And here I was thinking that movies needed pass the Bechdel Test to be better. But apparently I was wrong. What movies really need to do is stick to proper physics. Well I’m glad we got that sorted, aren’t you?

Quote of the Day: How the Bechdel Test could save the Oscars
If I can tell what role someone is going to play in a plot by their race or gender, you f**d up as a filmmaker.
This is why the “it’s just sci-fi, it shouldn’t have to be PC” argument is crap
I mean how am I supposed to feel if I see a movie set in the future and there aren’t any black or brown people in it? How is a child supposed to feel? It’s like someone’s saying, “I don’t like you and I don’t want you to be here, so I’m creating a world where you don’t exist.”
‘Avatar’ Indignation Thread
By popular request (and my need for a place to vent, still), this is the thread in which to point out plot holes, the rampant racism, (hetero)sexism and ableism, and general all-round problems with James Cameron’s new ‘epic’, Avatar. Also… Read More ›
Ah, Tim Burton does Charles Dodgson – what could be finer?
I like this idea – it allows them to revisit the iconic characters and scenes as Alice struggles to remember her previous visits, and it allows for some kickarse new developments as well. I love the CGI work on Helena Bonham Carter’s Red Queen.
Does Twilight deserve any “feminist defence”?
There’s been so much criticism levelled at fans of the Twilight series of supernatural romance novels (as the publicity machine has cranked up for the release of the second film in the franchise) that feminist hackles are rising, because the criticism tends to be along the lines of “See! We told you women are just stupid! Look at what they’re doing now!”
Damning with faint praise OTD
Actually, I await the inevitable 2012 drinking-game posts with a moderate degree of anticipation. I’m a sucker for film narrative cliché collections.
Gratuitous midnight Jackie Chan video
From The Myth, which is a superior action romp with some lovely physical comedy, like the above.
Monsters vs Aliens – Feminist Win, Feminist Fail?
I had read that Monsters vs Aliens, the latest Dreamworks animated feature and homage to Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, is a feminist flick. And so it is, in a way; the central storyline has a definite feminist bent… Read More ›
Classic Action: Blue Thunder (1983) – He’s Out There
I had the chance to catch up on this classic action flick this week, so I was able to tick another off my list of ’80s Films that I Inexplicably Missed. (I have confessed to my weakness for cheezy shoot-em-up movies before, but newer readers might not be aware) It also had Malcolm McDowell as the baddie, and I do so enjoy a film where Malcolm flares his nostrils and bugs his eyes while saying outrageously repulsive things and ends up dying spectacularly (not going to include a spoiler warning for that, that was his sole function in 80s American cinema, so it was never a total surprise).
