I enjoyed it a lot more than the TV guide reviewer did. Particularly when she finally got to see the actual Northern Lights in the far north of Norway, complete with Edvard Grieg soundtrack (Peer Gynt,? Suite No. 2 Op. 55: Solveigs´s Song). This particular clip of her watching the aurora has a sign language translator for Lumley’s voiceover.

News from the Marriage Equality Rally (with bonus accessibility report)
Image: A group of smiling Hoydenizens standing on the steps of Sydney Town Hall, holding a sign that reads “Hoyden About Town for Marriage Equality”. In the background, we see people waving rainblow flags. I’m happy to report that a… Read More ›
The great Leader of the Opposition yawnfest
Rudd has so effectively wedged the Libs on virtually every issue of importance over the last year that they simply might as well not even bother turning up to the House, and I don’t think that’s a good thing for our system of government at all. I wish we actually had a more effective Federal Opposition (one here in NSW would be good as well), because I’m a firm believer that those holding the reins of government ought to be scrutinised and challenged effectively on a regular basis.
Whoydensday Nerdopalooza
I know you all want to see the Children in Need trailer for the Xmas episode, but watch this no-spoiler video first (as Bad Astronomy’s Phil Plait titled this 2001 A Space Odyssey/Doctor Who mashup/crossover: HALlons-y! [sfx: appreciative groan])
Happy Birthday to OTOOS
150 years for Mr Darwin’s Big Idea! I’m rather attracted to the idea of this special edition: Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species: A Graphic Adaptation.

Does Twilight deserve any “feminist defence”?
There’s been so much criticism levelled at fans of the Twilight series of supernatural romance novels (as the publicity machine has cranked up for the release of the second film in the franchise) that feminist hackles are rising, because the criticism tends to be along the lines of “See! We told you women are just stupid! Look at what they’re doing now!”
Damning with faint praise OTD
Actually, I await the inevitable 2012 drinking-game posts with a moderate degree of anticipation. I’m a sucker for film narrative cliché collections.

Pinch me
Fairfax has a piece on myths about obesity that is sensible and properly science-based, and which they are promoting in the banner area of the front page? Maybe there’s something to all this approaching-2012-apocalypso after all.
