The original version of this post was published almost exactly 4 years ago (2010-01-11) when extreme storms and snow caused havoc in Western Europe. Given that many of the same “so where’s your global warming now?” gotcha tropes are flying around again since the severe cold weather hit Northern America this week, it seems like it needs repeating.

This is a Lazy Summer repost of an old post, with some highlights from comments on the original post added, since they add to the snarkfest. Given that the Abbott government seems to be full of “rationalist” policies owing more than a small debt to Objectivist Libertarianism, it seemed like a good time to remind folks what unregulated government of prime movers for prime movers would actually look like.
How did a day that grew from West Virginian Mothers’ Work Days from 1858 onwards (where mothers worked together to improve their community), and Mothers’ Friendship Days from 1865 (to promote harmony between former opponents in the Civil War), become what we celebrate now as Mother’s Day?

This post is part of our Summer Slowdown repost series, and is revisited in solidarity with 15 year old Reddit user Lunam: comments on the original version of this post in October 2008 showed how often a dim view is taken of women reading in public.
This is a Summer Slowdown Guest Post (thanks QoT!) – a repost of a blog post from earlier this year.
Clearly the media meme of the month is “won’t someone think of the children, and the imaginary innocence we ascribe to them in order to justify our lack of openness about basic anatomy because it’s ~icky~?”
It’s a Summer Slowdown repost. Just reminding everybody, in the midst of all the ink being wasted over a Rudd challenge that simply will not happen, that Tony Abbott still regularly reveals a mind-boggling worldview via ill-judged attempts to be charming and/or witty.
