Now I wouldn’t know Scott Pendlebury, vice Captain of the Magpies (Collingwood) AFL team, if I fell over him. But apparently he is well known enough to be the victim of an unprovoked attack that saw him punched in the back… Read More ›

Keiko Fukuda: Be Strong, Be Gentle, Be Beautiful
Olde-tyme Hoydenizens may remember that I wrote about Keiko Fukuda back in 2007, in the Friday Hoyden feature. Fukuda is probably the most knowledgeable and accomplished judoka alive, the last living student of Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo. Geekfeminism… Read More ›
Dawn Fraser demonstrates crone power
Startled in the middle of the night by intruders, 72 year old former Olympian Dawn Fraser used her swimmer’s strength backed up by strategic deployment of her titanium knee to fight off one teenager who had grabbed her around the throat.
Not a fan of violence, but definitely a fan of self-defence, I say yay for Dawn.

FridaySaturday Hoyden: Ragen Chastain
Ragen’s excellent blog is called Dances With Fat (tagline: Dancers Come In All Shapes and Sizes) and it’s a cracker. From her bio: Most people would say that I’ve accomplished a lot in my life. I’ve certainly been extremely lucky… Read More ›
Now, I’m not the biggest Beckham fan in the world
so this post is not especially about gratuitous ogling here but about how it is happening elsewhere, which is why I haven’t posted one of the easily available photos of him showing rather more skin than he’s showing here. Although… Read More ›
Heads up for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians
I see an article in today’s SMH about yet another survey about sexual culture and mores which, of course, is in no way influenced by gender stereotypes. Sex-education classes are failing to teach young women the skills they need to… Read More ›
