Scrooge’s failing is in being disconnected from the people around him. The failure of today’s Scrooges is the belief that connecting with the people around them is enough.
The giants who strode the political landscape of my youth are toppling one by one, leaving only gnats swarming over the entrails of serious political principles while Big Money shakes shiny things at us all, politicians very much included.

With the news of the death of Nelson Mandela, for the next while there will be many reflections published on his life and its impact. It is worthwhile to take some time to think of one of the people who will be feeling his death most keenly, his wife Graça Machel.
The new documentary I Am A Girl is about to screen, briefly, in Sydney and Melbourne. The film gives six teenage girls, each in a different country, the space to speak of their lives.
From Destroy the Joint, a call for action at NSW state level: call upon the Attorney General Greg Smith to issue a direction to the NSW DPP under the Director of Public Prosecutions Act to ensure that no one is prosecuted solely for retracting an allegation of domestic or sexual violence without the approval of a senior lawyer within the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Update: Attorney-General Greg Smith has made a statement that he has no plans to revise the existing laws relating to this matter. Now is the time to up the pressure.
