64 Birthday Words for Aung San Suu Kyi

Burmese exile groups have launched a website called “64 for Suu” and invited celebrities, politicians and members of the public to send a 64-word birthday message to Ms Suu Kyi.

Aung San Suu Kyi is currently in prison awaiting trial for breaking the terms of her detention.

Here are my 64 words for Suu:

Happy 64th Birthday, admirable woman. Your voice and resolve inspire so many people. The unjust imprisonment of you and other illegally incarcerated prisoners of conscience has to end, not just in your country but around the world. May this be your last birthday in detention. May your struggles to bring democracy to your home country soon reap a happy harvest.

  1. Thankyou for posting this, tigtog.

Aung San Suu Kyi, you are one of the great heroes of this world, an inspiration in every country and community where freedom and conscience are valued. May this year be the one that sees your unjust imprisonment end, together with that of all those held by the illegitimate government of Burma. On this day, I salute you, and wish you a Happy Birthday.

  2. Although the Status of Forces Agreement prevents me from getting more closely involved with anything while I am in RoK (and also because my Korean is far from functional), I have been trying to get some pictures of the touching demonstrations going on outside the Myanmar Embassy, which is on my street. I have failed to do so yet, but there is something going on every few days.
Thank you for posting this. I pray it ends soon, and that she will be free to go home.
