Otterday! And Open Thread.

Today’s otterfolk are coming to you via Macke827 (Marcus Woelfle) on Flickr. The photo was taken in the Pforzheim wildlife park (English translation) in the Black Forest, Germany.

  1. I love a good otter in the snow!
I’m about to commence two weeks of solid work on my PhD. I always find this sort of thing very scary because OMG what if I get nothing done and I’ve arranged it especially and then everything will be down the tubes.
Must not set self up to fail. Must not set self up to fail.

  2. My favourite lesbian comedian just posted a link to a High Res version of the Ross Sisters and Solid Potato Salad.
Video Description: 3 contortionist sisters in gingham suits meant to indicate that they are farmer’s daughters sing a nonsense song about potato salad while displaying their rhythmic flexibility and acrobatic style.

  3. Full translation of Swedish interview with Assange accuser. Of course, it doesn’t take long for the apologists to move in. “Every genuine female claimant will now be grilled to death about their claims because of what YOU have done.” Hmm, that never happened before, did it.

  4. Reports on Twitter of an earthquake in San Francisco. Nothing on the news pages yet.

  5. Phew. It was only a 4-ish on the Richter scale.
(ETA) Actually, the USGS has downgraded it to 2.1

  6. The Westboro Baptist Church (the God Hates Fags mob – no linkjuice for you!) have predictably put out a press release praising God for the death of 6 people in Arizona at the hands of Jared Lee Loughner [news story on the shootings].
Typical. They want the outrage because ironically, they trust that the people they offend are not likely to actually assassinate them for being so cruelly offensive, they’ll only do a minor assault at worst, and then the WBC can sue.
They do enrage me, but that’s exactly what they want to do.

  7. Sometimes I imagine what God/Jesus would actually say to them (assuming that as an atheist I’m wrong about G/J etc). That usually helps calm the rage for a bit. How they can see themselves as Xtian I don’t know. What a horrible way to feel all the time, to have that much poison in your mind.

  8. Just spoke to myNigel. He was putting on a pair of shorts to go painting in when he felt a stick in the pocket. So he put his hand in and grabbed the stick. Then the stick grabbed him. Then the ‘stick’ bit him and drew blood. So he flicks it off onto the floor and there is blood welling out of his finger so he goes looking for the ‘stick’ on the floor in case it is something nasty/poisonous. He finds it and goes to pick it up and it screams at him. He gently picks it up so it can’t grab him again with it’s mandibles and checks – six legs so it’s an insect – and puts it outside in the garden because he figures that anything that cranky deserves his respect.
I had some time on my hands this morning while waiting for a car to be serviced so I decided on a whim to have a massage. I went to a walk in Chinese massage place and it was only as I was lying face down, fully clothed that I remembered that these guys don’t use essential oils and aaarrrrgggghhhh! they use elbows. I never knew I had so many sore spots until he found them all unerringly. It certainly is a fine line between pleasure and pain and I am fluctuating between feeling like something that got caught between a mortar and pestle and a piece of flexy elastic. On the whole the good outweighs the bad though.
