Sunday Singalong: Cyndi Lauper

We love Cyndi!

Here she is performing the song the world fell in love with: Girls Just Want To Have Fun in 1983 (jump to lyrics).

And from her 2010 album Memphis Blues singing the classic Wild Women Don’t Get The Blues (nice slideshow of lots of Cyndi pics) (jump to lyrics):

Girls Just Want To Have Fun

Written by Robert Hazard (1979)
First recorded by Cyndi Lauper on album She’s So Unusual (1983)

I come home in the morning light
My mother says when you gonna live your life right
Oh mother dear we’re not the fortunate ones
And girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun

The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells what you gonna do with your life
Oh daddy dear you know you’re still number one
But girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have

That’s all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Girls – they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun

Some boys take a beautiful girl
And hide her away from the rest of the world
I want to be the one to walk in the sun
Oh girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have

That’s all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Girls – they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun,
They want to have fun,
They want to have fun…

Wild Women Don’t Have The Blues

by Ida Cox (recording of July 1924)
from Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 2 (1924-1925) (Document 5323), copyright notice

I hear these women raving ’bout their monkey men
About their trifling1 husbands and their no good friends
These poor women sit around all day and moan
Wondering why their wandering papa’s don’t come home
But wild women don’t worry, wild women don’t have no blues

Now when you’ve got a man, don’t never be on the square
‘Cause if you do he’ll have a woman everywhere
I never was known to treat no one man right
I keep ’em working hard both day and night
‘Cause wild women don’t worry, wild women don’t have their blues

I’ve got a disposition and a way of my own
When my man starts kicking I let him find another home
I get full of good liquor, walk the streets all night
Go home and put my man out if he don’t act right
Wild women don’t worry, wild women don’t have their blues

You never get nothing by being an angel child
You better change your ways and get real wild
I wanna tell you something, I wouldn’t tell you a lie
Wild women are the only kind that really get by
‘Cause wild women don’t worry, wild women don’t have their blues

  1. Probably should have put this in the body of the post, but here’s the Singalong Question: what wonderfully musical women have you been listening to lately?

  2. Mamie Minch, singing about a mermaid who could do with learning how to be a wild woman from Cyndi Lauper.

  3. I had never heard “Wild Women Don’t Have The Blues” before. Thank you!
My admiration for Ms Lauper increased when she was kicked of the US Celebrity Apprentice* for, well, being too honest (the aspect of the task she was being praised for was not entirely her idea, and she said as much).
*Pauline Hanson’s selection by Channel 9 means I will not watch this season of the Oz version. Gosh darn it!

  4. Off, not of. Eeeek!

  5. Someone told me once that GJWHF is about “sisters doing it for themselves” but I can’t see it. Can anyone enlighten me?

    • If this is going to become a Songs About Masturbation thread I suggest that Lauper’s She Bop is a far more obvious candidate 🙂
