I, Animal at the Melbourne Zoo was boring and stupid, don’t even bother.
Making this Shameless Self-Promotion Saturday: my book is finally published. Wheeeeeee! Not asking anyone to buy it, the price of academic hardbacks is gasp-inducing. But I am asking everyone possible to please go to your local library, or uni library if you have an association with one, and request it from them. I just need to sell 400 for the publisher to need to do a second impression, and hopefully stop it from sinking without trace. If you’re curious about the content, you can browse inside at this link.

My 11 year old daughter has taken to watching infomercials.Voluntarily. I am perplexed.
My 8 year old quite likes infomercials too, angharad.. He’ll call out to me with questions like ‘mum, do you like to make salsa?’ I don’t think he understands that they are just ads, or that the only purpose of an ad is to sell the product. I think he views them as helpful information from a nice friend.
@Arcadia I think that your 8yr old and my 9yr old would get on well 🙂 I know that they have done stuff at school about advertising but it still gets through.
We have visitors up from Sydney. We have three adults who drink alcohol, 6 bottles of red wine, one bottle of white, a carton of beer, (plus the liquor stash above the microwave if they get really silly) cricket on the telly, a selection of cheeses, cold meats and salad for lunch and I will be making pizzas for dinner. I suspect as the non-drinking adult I shall also be preparing tomorrows recovery fry up since they will all be asleep or nursing enormous hangovers. Oh I also have a lovely box of Haigh’s choccies. I like my visitors.
Aaagh! tigtog! I lost half my morning to that Whatever thread – and I’m still only half way through.

Shamelessly promoting a friend of mine: My friend Jay Kristoff recently published his first novel, Stormdancer. It’s a Japanese-esque steampunk setting with strong environmental themes (and a female protagonist), so if that’s something that might interest you, I highly recommend it.
Also, where on earth has the year gone?! I can’t believe that it’s almost December already!
I recently went to a Chinese restaurant with a friend and his female intended. The intended and I were utterly mortified when in the middle of the meal the friend said: “I love a good Chinky, I do.” At the time, we both told him to shut up but he denied saying it and still does.
Last week in the office, a white male colleague aged 30 said, in answer to a question: “Yah mahn!” in a thick pseudo West Indian accent!
Most of us were thinking, “Where the hell did that come from?!?”

That’s disappointing. I hadn’t seen negative reviews of it yet, and my sister and my partner both raved about it (I’m still early in the actual novel itself, but read the picture book version available at the launch, which was so adorable). As it falls into my research area I’m looking at incorporating it into postgrad topics, so I’ll certainly keep those criticisms in mind and keep a more critical eye out as I finish reading.

I was having issues with my work laptop today. When the IT man was remotely connected to my machine my Outlook calendar reminder popped up about a Human League gig.
Me: “Oh you can see my reminders now”
Him: “Human League? What’s that?”
Me: “A band – they’re great! Don’t you know them?”
Him: “I’m only 25″
I have never felt so old before. Him being born in 1987…

Saw Skyfall. Have an uneasy feeling that I will have disturbingly erotic nightmares about Javier Bardem tonight. Perhaps James Bond will save me. Or Cleaver Greene.
Back in the 80s, whenever I’d see an old story from 60s ‘Doctor Who’ on PBS it always looked absolutely ancient to me. Despite being from only 20 years earlier, it might as well have been footage from a 1930s movie. Yet stuff from the late 80s/early 90s such as ‘Quantum Leap’ or ‘Star Trek: TNG’ doesn’t seem anywhere near as old today.
Okay, so a lot of that is down to the dirty kinescopes that were used for the WHO stories, but still.
And I still think of the last couple of seasons of 80s ‘Doctor Who’ as being fairly recent, despite them being older now than the Troughton era was then.
