What’s piqued your media interests lately?

As usual for media circus threads, please share your bouquets and brickbats for particular items in the mass media, or highlight cogent analysis or pointed twitterstorms etc in new media. 1. We spent time this morning explaining to our son why Carl Pistorious being charged with culpable driving doesn’t actually mean anything in relation to his brother Oscar Pistorious’ murder charges. Son did decide that this was a bad time for their family though, which it probably is. But we were trying to explain that just because they have both been charged with bad things it doesn’t mean that they are guilty or that the family is bad or any of the other things the media is busily trying to suggest.

    • Must admit waiting until now to charge him for a death in 2008 seems more than a little odd. Perhaps with the arrest of Oscar it just popped up on the computer with the known confederates tag or whatever and somebody noticed that not having charged him for all these years looked really bad?

  2. Shocked and revolted at whoever is in charge of the @TheOnion twitter feed today. They are talking about a 9 year old girl. A nine year old girl who corrected a reporter who said to her ‘I’ll just call you Annie” with “No, my name is Quvenzhane”.

  3. Jayzus, Mindy, I wish I hadn’t looked at that, I don’t want to know that there are people that awful in the world. Are they being given hell for it?

  4. They are on Twitter, but as one insightful commenter notes: The Onion says something awful, feminism will get the blame. Plus the usual swag of ‘It’s just a joke’ people who don’t get it.

  5. Oh, and having a bottle of brain bleach handy is definitely required reading the inevitable comments that are on blogs with next to no moderation. What the fuck is wrong with people that using a gendered slur against a nine-year-old child is okay and a joke?

  6. This is the nine year old in question. I invite you to draw your own conclusions about whether this would have happened if she was white.

  7. More Oscars crap:

Four of the examples in @SethMacFarlane “We Saw Your Boobs” song were rape scenes: Boys Don’t Cry, The Accused, Lawless, & Monster. Asshole.

  8. I haven’t visited the Ausvotes website before, but if this is the quality of the articles in general, I will be back.

  9. Yes, the AusVotes2013 site has some good reads, I’m also enjoying a lot of the stuff going up on Margo Kingston’s new endeavour, Australians For Honest Politics.

  10. What’s up with the Monthly and the recent vicious fatphobia? (Not linking ‘cos it’s a triggery emotive repeat of every sociocultural belief about fat, supposedly by a doctor.) It was really not something I was expecting from that direction.

  11. Is that the one where she once saw a fat person enjoying food and living life to the full and it scarred her for life so she had to go work in a bariatric (spell check says barbaric, how apt) clinic?

  12. Yes, something like that. Also telling us that if you are a thin smoker, quit and become fat, that’s worse than not quitting (I’d leeeeeerve to see the epidemiology supporting that claim.)

  13. Yeah, I’m highly sceptical of that too. It worries me that actual doctors think rubbish like that.

  14. OFFS – she is six and little girls bathrooms have doors so who is going to care?
Nice to see that they used the correct gender pro-nouns throughout too.
