Otterday! And Open Thread.

Today’s Open/Chat thread is hosted by this otter. Is it just me and all the parenting I’ve been doing this week, or does this otter look guilty about something? Snapped in Tokyo and shared on flickr by tomosuke214 – click through for heaps more otter pics.

I couldn’t resist. How gorgeous is today’s bonus otter? Shared by Tambako The Jaguar.

Please feel free to use this thread to natter about anything your heart desires. Is there anything great happening in your life? Anything you want to get off your chest? Reading a good book (or a bad one)? Anything in the news that you’d like to discuss? What have you created lately? Commiserations, felicitations, temptations, contemplations, speculations?

  1. Hello! Have been up the coast with dodgy internet the last few days. What’s occurring?

  2. Um I might have started a zombie stoush on an Overflow thread, um you know somewhere. Sorry about that.

  3. “Have been up the coast with dodgy internet the last few days.”
At least that sounds better than up the creek without a paddle … 😛

  4. Spurred on by the increasing piles of useless clutter in our house, as well as knee high garden weeds (and there’s some I don’t know the name of which are shoulder height),I have spent the day chucking stuff on the piles for the Hard And Green Rubbish collection I’ve ordered.
Enjoying a beer and smugness now.
There’s still a lot to do though. There is MUCH op shopping in my future.
Anyone need a body board, adult size, hardly used? Couple of drills which nearly work?

  5. I seem to be skating on the edge of cooking disasters today. I nearly failed the Neverfail scones and the less said about the white sauce the better then I forgot the cauliflower bake was in the oven and just remembered to pull it out in time. Of course the proof is in the eating which we still have to do. Fingers crossed.

  6. Drills which nearly work sound like just the sort for me.

  7. I have spend most of my spare time this past week or so writing up summary guides for the various parties in this election, which I am now in the process of putting up here. I’ve got about a quarter of them up so far, with the rest to (hopefully) be reformatted, put up, and linked this evening. The draft versions of most of them can be seen here.
I hadn’t realised just quite how many policies some of the parties actually had!

  8. Echoing a status I just saw on FB:

I don’t know which is more depressing. That St Kilda players set fire to a dwarf for fun, or that they set fire to each other for fun. What’s wrong with a game of Scrabble?

  9. I really think footballers are just “avoid” altogether. Too damn many rotten apples in that particular barrel.

  10. A comment on the 50 Shades book from an article about the cast of the movie:

Although the book was astonishingly successful, it was not widely embraced by literary critics, in part because of its explicit depiction of sexual bondage.

Ha ha no. I think it had more to do with grammar, repetition and lack of reality.

  11. Massive congratulations to Tansy Rayner Roberts on her Hugo award for Best Fan Writer!

  12. Mimbles: Ohyes, and Tansy is the first Australian woman to win a Hugo! Brilliant.
(The awards as a whole, though, were rather underwhelming from a gender point of view. Women represented around a third of the winners; in addition, fandom has rather confidently decided that men are great at creating pro stuff, and women are great at being fans. Which is… hm. Well. Yes.)
