Joyeux Quatorze Juillet! @oldspice guy should say something in French to mark Bastille Day

Isaiah Mustafa in the viral video for Old SpiceWhy yes, I am blatantly dangling some bait towards the current viral media phenomenon that has grown from “I’m on a horse”, “I’m riding this horse backwards” and “swan dive” to Isaiah Mustafa making quick turnaround youtube video responses to blog posts and tweets about That Commercial.

Go on, Isaiah. Talk to us in French. You know you want to.

Videos with transcripts after the cut:

“The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” (aka “I’m on a horse”)
“Hello, ladies, look at your man, now back to me, now back at your man, now back to me.
Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped using ladies scented body wash and switched to Old Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you?
You’re on a boat with the man your man could smell like.
What’s in your hand, back at me.
I have it, it’s an oyster with two tickets to that thing you love.
Look again, the tickets are now diamonds.
Anything is possible when your man smells like Old Spice and not a lady.
I’m on a horse.”
“Did You Know?” (aka “I’m riding this horse backwards”)
Did you know that woman prefer Old Spice for their men, one bajillion times more than lady-scented body washes?
Did you know that I’m riding this horse backwards? HeeYaa!
“Questions” (aka “swan dive”)
Hello ladies, how are you? Fantastic.
Does your man look like me? No.
Can he smell like me? Yes.
Should he use Old Spice body wash? I don’t know.
Do you like the smell of adventure?
Do you want a man who smells like he can bake you a gourmet cake in the dream kitchen he built for you with his own hands?
Of course you do.
Swan dive!
Into the best night of your life.
So ladies, should your man smell like an Old Spice man?
You tell me.

  1. Hm. I’m not seeing the embedded videos and I don’t know why. Is it only me?
ETA: (OK, worked out the problem – I’d chosen a too wide width so they didn’t display. Fixed now)

  2. In the name of all that’s holy woman, I have to work tomorrow not look at gorgeous men saying things in French. Sure there’s plenty of time for that sort of thing that I can work into my schedule, but I do actually have to do some semblance of work tomorrow.

  3. Total appreciation for this campaign – clever and funny and responsive AND hot? They got it right.

    • I expect that the Wieden+Kennedy team is having an absolute hoot doing these video responses – it’s amazing to see how well a social media campaign works when it’s done by people who really understand how it all operates and who have the financial backing to do it properly. Because it can’t be cheap – sure, cheap compared to shooting the big ads and buying the air time, but still: they must have a studio with film crew plus an office for a team of nerd-creatives winnowing out the stuff online that could make for a good response, and then another office for the team of writers working on the scripts for the 30 second responses. They must have at least a dozen film-crew plus about the same in agency creatives working on this.
Prediction: the inevitable attempt to copycat this approach within the next month or two will crash and burn because they don’t grok it.

  4. These ads just make me so happy.
