Otterday! And Open Thread.

Happy Halloween, folks! Today’s otter comes courtesy of my-hospitality.com.

Adorable Lakes Aquarium otters, Mia and Smudge, soon got into the Halloween party spirit when their keepers decided to give them a different and appropriately themed seasonal challenge.

The otters’ usual mealworm treat arrived in their enclosure tucked inside a pumpkin. This immediately aroused the interest of the curious otters, who set about playing with it in an attempt to figure out how to get to the food inside.

Otters and other critters at Georgia Aquarium also had Halloween snacks in Jack o’ Lanterns. Video is below the cut.

  1. I just read an argument that made a lot of sense to me, even though this could well be in the bolting the stable door after the horse has bolted department: without trackbacks, referrer spam (aiming to improve search engine page ranking) would not exist. If there were no referrer spam, there would be oodles of bandwidth set free. Of course, even if everybody turned off their trackbacking software all at once, there would still be spammers trying it on, but perhaps if they were getting no reward at all then eventually they’d get the message that what they are doing is even more pointless than it is now.
Anyway, this means that I’ve turned trackbacks off, and also the pinger that lets other blogs know when they’ve been linked to here. If you want to let people know that you’ve posted something which refers to a post here, why not leave a relevant comment by your own hand?

  2. There’s an otter called Smudge? *lip trembles, tak explodes of cute*
There’s a study in Victoria going on at the moment about sexual assault. It’s for assault victims of both sexes (unfortunately only two options there), and it doesn’t matter whether the assault was reported to the police or not. If you want to take the survey, the link is here.
And I was wondering if anyone here knew – do state or local governments have any role to play in a campaign for same sex marriage equality? We’ve started a campaign group at my uni, and are mainly going to focus on annoying the federal politicians, but I wonder if it would be effective to put some pressure on other levels of ALP leadership too.

  3. I’m having this busy weekend of attempting to socialise with people I don’t already know, and I find I’m in a constant state of “Oh no, what will someone say” anxiety. Which is completely unwarranted – no one has actually said anything ignorant about disability in my hearing – but I had forgotten what it was like to hang out with people who you don’t already know are awesome.

  4. Just had to share this:
    Mos Eisley space-port. *giggle*
