  1. One of my very bad depression weeks.

If it helps, I really enjoy reading your comments. They’re always insightful and well-written, and usually you’ve said everything I’ve wanted to say, except ten times better.

It’s the holidays, and I’ve been reading a ridiculous amount of Agatha Christie. Besides picking up tips on how to plan the perfect murder, I’ve also been learning a lot about 1920-1950s England. For example: they used to play the national anthem before films. Saying someone is the “best butter” is a compliment. Doctors prescribed tisanes, powders, and tonics. England has three species of humanoid: lower house servants, upper house servants and people. Spinsters have no one to focus their powerful maternal energies on, and so often become murderers. Stabbings are usually done by Italians, poisonings by women, hit-and-runs by Americans, drownings by Orientals, and shootings by English men. Animals, plants and children had not been invented yet.
The various -isms are just so overdone it’s hilarious. I especially like it when Christie writes about the lower classes. Very entertaining.

  3. Thankyou.

  4. Every now and then, as I’m clearing out the spam-bucket, I do have to wonder at some of the websites that are associated with 10s or even 100s of blog comments and why it’s happening. A dog training tips website just doesn’t seem a likely spammer, you know, especially when it’s running on a free blog platform rather than a self-hosted site with full control over its advertising. Not that I clicked through – maybe when you go there it’s full of nasty worms/viruses or something.
Do people just sign up unwittingly for SEO ops that turn out to be blackhats operating through factory spammers? What the frag is going on?

  5. This is my first Hoyden OT, so I don’t know if this is appropriate. Please let me know if it isn’t. Here goes:
A commenter on another forum I visit believes that Everything Will Be Better if the floodwater in Brisbane (they were very specific) gets dumped in the “desert” in “center”* Australia. I don’t quite know where to begin with that. I just pointed out that deserts are delicate ecosystems in and of themselves. I’m not sure a suggestion relating to the people who live in Central Oz would register.
    *They were non-specific.

    • Perla, that jawdropper’s a right pearler (sorry).
The drought-stricken areas of Western Australia could use the water better, surely – but as Nick notes, what specific megamachine for transporting gigalitres of water did this genius have in mind?

  6. Does he have any ideas on how to transport it?

  7. Perla, that definitely sounds like a situation where Charles’ Rules of Argument apply extra well. It’s nearly as random a fantasy as “wouldn’t it be cool to have a world made out of chocolate?” as a serious proposal (that is it might be fun to argue about whether chocolate cars can run on liquid chocolate if everyone is joking together, but if one person was deadly serious you’d be in trouble).
But if you want something specific, aside from the transportation question floods are quite devastating in deserts too. They’re still floods. They wash away roads, they wash away the best of the soil, they indiscriminately kill wildlife and destroy human settlements.

  8. Thanks, all. They basically typed “It sounded like a good idea to me! I know nothing of your country. Geez, person!” I just left it at that.
    Thanks for the link, Mary!

  9. Right, I know nothing of your country, but I’ve still got this great idea that I can’t believe you haven’t already got going. Gee whilickers, thanks ever so much random internet genius!

  10. Gee whilickers, thanks ever so much random internet genius!
This has to be adapted as the caption for a lolbeast.
