Today’s otter comes via grahameb on flickr (and is posted with permission). Grahame snapped it at the Perth Zoo, and has captioned it “Definitely practising for a role in an upcoming Narnia movie.”
Please feel free to use this thread to natter about anything your heart desires. Is there anything great happening in your life? Anything you want to get off your chest? Reading a good book (or a bad one)? Anything in the news that you’d like to discuss? What have you created lately? Commiserations, felicitations, temptations, contemplations, speculations?

Love the Otterday graphic!
I’m feeling very pleased because one of the bigger papers here published a piece I wrote on SlutWalk: SlutWalk takes aim at rapists.
It’s the first time I’ve had a feminist piece published. And I’m very excited to be heading off down to the Wellington slutwalk today, where I will meet some of the fabulous feminist bloggers I know IRL for the first time. It should be a great day.
High fives Deborah!
Onya Deborah! I had a great time at Slutwalk Sydney, I’m sure you’ll have a fantastic day of activism and friendship. (glad you like the graphic)
HBO has a little gift for True Blood fans to promote the upcoming 4th season – a recap of the Story So Far in 5 minutes:

Woot! Same sex marriage has passed in New York, 33-29.
My parents have just found a buyer for their house in the mountains. Now they can start looking for a smaller house on the Central Coast.
BTW, don’t read the comments on Deborah’s article – QoT has summarised them so you don’t have to!
I have discovered tonight via Twitter that I am a retro Slummy Mummy. I’m thinking this is probably not just accurate but also a good thing.
I’ve been re-reading Harry Potter in anticipation of the last movie, and I’m struck by the amount of fat-shaming. The first time I read them I didn’t notice. Wow. Also, teen drinking.
Well done Deborah! And well done Qot for braving the comment thread.
I have made the big decision that I’m going to apply to do a history PhD, probably to start in 2012 if I can get funding. In an emotionally difficult week, the best bits have been working in the archives and going to a conference. It feels like where I belong.
Yay Deborah! 🙂
I hope you get funding, kirstente.
I did notice this on my last reread, Keira. VERY ugh to the fat-hate, complete with stereotypes of nasty insides being reflected on the outside, stuffing of face and junk food everywhere.
The whole family is on week three of Teh Dread Lurgy, which has been getting better and then worse for the past month or so. During a better spell I’d made the decision to finally wean the Tiny Tyrant (and informed him it was coming up) so we’re on to day 2 so far. And I’m finally watching Battlestar Galactica, whose female characters are making me twitch, even if Starbuck has been recast as a woman.
@ Aphie, week 3! Oh my I hope you all start getting better and staying better soon. Sounds very nasty indeed.
A friend reminds me that voting for JJJ’s Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time closes in a few hours.
A quick glance suggests that they included some women musicians in their various top 10s and industry lists this time.
Good fortune, kirstente.
Sending virtual chicken soup to Aphie.
Argh – v. busy this week! Missing hanging around lots.
Great photoessay (NSFW) in Gloss on testing NYC’s laws allowing women to be topless in public.
OMG teenagers drink alcohol and have sex! http://blogs.crikey.com.au/purepoison/2011/06/30/lock-up-your-daughters/
Seen on twitter, something along the lines of “I miss the 60’s when no one did drugs or had sex.” Quite.
Argh. Why can’t teachers email all the kids in their class when they cancel an early morning class? They’ve all got email addresses, and wouldn’t it be simpler than trying to find them all in person and missing one?
I could really have done without losing 40 minutes this morning getting a kid to school before the bus runs there only to now find out she’s got nothing to do until normal start time now after all.
Come into the twenty-first fucking century!
