Otterday! And Open Thread.

This otter was caught in the snow at the San Diego Zoo, and shared by cybertoad on flickr.

Please feel free to use this thread to natter about anything your heart desires. Is there anything great happening in your life? Anything you want to get off your chest? Reading a good book (or a bad one)? Anything in the news that you’d like to discuss? What have you created lately? Commiserations, felicitations, temptations, contemplations, speculations?

  1. The Wicked Fairy got tickets for a hot air balloon ride over Canberra for my 30th. I am a teensy bit afraid of heights but it was STILL fantastic. Cross one more thing off my “things I want to do before I die” list. 🙂

  2. Aphie, that should be wonderful! Great time of year for it.
I’ve just got back from seeing the new 3 Musketeers movie with the family. Gloriously OTT romping, gallivanting, swashing and buckling was viewed. Minor annoyance: dumbed down the politics too much, and there were a few moments where the characters did utterly unnecessary grand gestures which were way too anti-common-sense. It would have been so easy to just not do those.

  3. Aphie, you’re stealing my birthday present thunder! That sounds fantastic!
Look what I got this morning 🙂

  4. Mim, those are marvellous!

  5. Mim and Aphie – cool!
I am packing up my home in a procrastinated manner. Most productive thing I’ve done so far: took a backpack full of books to the 2nd hand bookshop. Well, half ended up at Vinnies (which I expected). Lucky the 2nd hand shop did not take them all, as the problem with being offered credit in a 2nd hand bookshop… At least I came home with far fewer books than I took away! And I need light reading material when I have productive things I should be doing, really, I do!

  6. Happy Birthday to Mim and Aphie! ❤
I have been utterly blind-sided by this wisdom-tooth extraction recovery thing. It’s been pure agony, and I’ve nearly finished the second week of healing. I had bone drilled into and they had a hard time getting one of the teeth out (they were both very impacted) so apparently it was likely that I would go through more pain than the average patient. My tongue is still swollen, my throat is sore and my teeth are killing me. And I’m utterly sick of the food. I’m wasting away! I’ve dropped a kilo or two, I think. My Mum was a dear and made mashed potatoes and added the sauce from her Rogan Josh that she made last night. I topped it with the raita she made and it was utter heaven! Such a lovely change from custard and jelly.
I’m following the Occupy Perth efforts, and Our Mob, an Inidigenous Australian group on Facebook, invited me to post on their FB page about it. I’m quite delighted.
Has anyone got any suggestions of movies I can watch? Supernatural stuff, fun stuff, comedies? I’m getting so dead bored lying around all the time, but if I sit up for too long I get worn out.

  7. @Amazing Kim, sympathy. I hope it gets better for you soon. Brilliant idea by your Mum.

Happy Birthday Aphie and Mimbles. Hope you both had lovely days.

  8. Happy birthday to the birthdayed.

Sympathies, Napalmnacey, tooth trouble is horrible.

  9. I saw this and thought of you.

  10. My humble apologies Napalmnacey, not sure why I thought you were AK. Hope your mouth is feeling better today.

    • Looking at Feministe these last few days, I see a great need and I’m about to test it here:
Putative vexatious/obnoxious arsehat comment should be contained within a distinctive styling box

  11. Now testing whether the styling class works properly on a blockquote or whether I need a seperate chunk of CSS.

arsehat droppings arsehat droppings arsehat droppings

  12. OK – if one wishes to designate something one is quoting (or a whole comment, if one is a moderator) as arsehat droppings, just add class=”arsehat” to your p, div or blockquote tag.
    ETA: I’ve also added a mod_note class.

  13. (-:B does not seem to be working. Am I doing it wrong?

    • Boo – perhaps it’s only going to work for logged on users unless I find a ninja way to play with it all. How annoying.
You did wrap the class markup in a proper tag, didn’t you? On its own it will do nothing – has to be within a p, div or blockquote.

  14. Testing…

    I’m pro-choice BUT…

(The substance of some guys I’ve been arguing with lately).

  15. OK, it looks like it strips out lower level code from those who are not registered users.

It should be theoretically-possible for me to specify that a few extra markups are allowable in comments here, but it might take me a little while to work out what I have to specify in order to make it available for non-user commentors.

  16. let’s see if that tweak I just did does the business.
    testing testing testing

  17. nope – next tweak
    testing p testing p testing p
testing div testing div testing div

testing bq testing bq testing bq

  18. heh – oh so nearly!

  19. testing bq and nested p

  20. sweet. I think I’ll go back in and restrict it to just the p tag – that should be enough for commentor styling purposes – if you want to get a bit fancier you can nest it inside a blockquote.

  21. Putative vexatious/obnoxious arsehat comment should be contained within a distinctive styling box

I like the way P Z Myers does it too, with the Mr Gumby.

    • I have borrowed extensively from PZ’s ‘creationist’ quote tag! (I also fixed the blockquote class to include an ‘arsehat’ tag now)
