Otterday! And Open Thread

Today’s Open thread is hosted by an otter balancing on the back of an Indian rhinoceros in a marvellous display of sang froid, captured by manaties on Flickr.

Otter on an Indian rhinoceros

Please feel free to use this thread to natter about anything your heart desires. Is there anything great happening in your life? Anything you want to get off your chest? Reading a good book (or a bad one)? Anything in the news that you’d like to discuss? What have you created lately? Commiserations, felicitations, temptations, contemplations, speculations?

  1. Shutting Down the Self Esteem Engine has the charming comment:

and your thoughts will ricochet around the internet with all the speed and force of Oprah at an ashram buffet.

H Razer has apparently moved on to do fat jokes now.

  2. Note to self: your sudden malaise and need to sleep constantly could be late pregnancy. Or! You could be sick. After a very unusually stressful week, apparently the fetus and I are spending the weekend in bed. It is burning some serious wiggling energy in there.

I wish it was Yuletide already. Today would be a great day to dig out fic for reading.

  3. To anyone who’s missed the story, a Swedish cinema chain is including The Bechdel Test in its rating system, and Alison Bechdel herself is tired of having to explain that women are human.

  4. White privilege means only having to deal with the crap in my own head, not the crap spewing out of other people’s heads when their white privilege is questioned. This comment bought to you by the reaction of fucksticks on Twitter to the POC community mouring the death of a 19 year old woman seeking help after a car accident. She survived the accident but not the reaction of those who should have helped her.

  5. DWB Driving While Black has been a potentially lethal condition and Walking While Black seems just as dangerous. I’m predicting some NRA money for a defense should charges arise.

  6. I just digitally handed in my last uni assignment for my last undergrad unit ever. I don’t feel relieved at all. In fact, I am just obsessing over a minor spacing issue I accidentally sent through (I corrected it and emailed a second version less than 1/2 an hour later).
I have made peace with my highly-strung nature, but I would love to be able to relax after I finish something important!

  7. I can’t remember if I mentioned that I dropped out of librarianship. So, folks, after failing two assignments I dropped out of librarianship, thoroughly demoralised and no closer to finding paid employment. While I figure out what to do, I’ve decided to re-start my blog, which I had to set up as part of the course, but has lain dormant for several months. Whatever happens next, I am obviously going to have to start putting some work into forging some kind of current profile as a writer. It’s going to be mostly based on what an imaginary well-informed actor or audience member might feel enriches their experience of theatre: stuff about Shakespeare, acting, directing, lost plays, forgotten artists, performance as sociology. I’ll let you know when there’s something worth looking at.

  8. I’m really sorry your librarianship course didn’t work out for you Orlando.
Nice moment of the day: during a maternity ward tour, a happy mother wheeled in by happy paramedics, baby born before arrival. (I think it was a pretty fresh newborn! Still a bit bluish to my untrained eyes, but judging from everyone’s demeanour all was well.)

  9. Hey all you Hoyden Who-fans, have you seen the new mini-episode prelude to the upcoming special? It is really awesome…
