Otterday! And Open Thread

This weekend’s open thread is hosted by an otter wrapped in kelp:

Please feel free to use this thread to natter about anything your heart desires. Is there anything great happening in your life? Anything you want to get off your chest? Reading a good book (or a bad one)? Anything in the news that you’d like to discuss? What have you created lately? Commiserations, felicitations, temptations, contemplations, speculations?

  1. Current pet peeve: all the white people who think that in order to make their blog post or online article current, they should include references to twerking. Given that you obviously only became aware of twerking as a result of a white woman appropriating and being particularly racist about it, you look kind of studied-ignorance racist to me.

  2. That’s kinda gross, Aqua.
Happy Otterday to everyone! I’m heading to a workshop for my uni’s women’s collective today, where we’re making a bunch of materials for O Week. This is the year where we finally have support from the student union, so I think it’ll be a definite improvement!

  3. All prepared for the boiling hot weekend – plant mister is refilled, plenty of cold water in the fridge, and the errands are all run. The air conditioner wound up being switched on at about 5 to 9, because the main room had heated up enough already by that point (despite the blinds being drawn and closed at about 5.20am to try and keep the heat down) to make it uncomfortable to be sitting around in. Clothing plans for today are a sarong and underwear and that’s it.
Temperature at the weather station nearest to us (Jandakot) at 10.07 was 33C.

  4. I hope it doesn’t get too hot up here (Brisbane) again, Megpie. Last week when it was hot it got to 43 degrees and that was no fun at all. Luckily the uni library is always cold! My flat, on the other hand, did not cool down a bit all night… I hope you survive it well enough!

  5. I am v seriously beginning to consider the absolute equation of boyhood/prepubescent masculinity in mainstream Australia with violence to be an awful, insidious kind of poison. It horrifies me, how “superheroes” are being pushed on little penis-wielders, before they’re even speaking in full sentences, often. It’s something I’ve been aware of for a little while, but the older the Tiny Tyrant gets, the more of his cohort I see, the more noticeable it seems to be.

    • Aphie, brane is not playing well with others this week so I have nothing coherent to add, but I feel you.

I don’t want to make yet another post about the evils of guest-post-spam, but this latest chap’s list of suggested guest post titles (which he has supposedly carefully researched to be suitable for this site) takes the biscuit:

  6. Now I want to know what a ‘Football Better’ is? Is it like a middle-class person for us scum?

  7. No 9 should really be at the end…
I wonder if the link comes from references to anti-feminist bingo cards and the like.

  8. Also it was 32C at 8:30am here yesterday, and by Friday we will have had 3 days of 45+ in a row. Do we win the heatwave?

    • I’m very glad that so far Sydney is heatwave-free. I imagine it will be our turn soon enough, but I’m hoping we don’t “win”.

  9. Ah, I see. Thanks Tigtog!

After 45C yesterday, it seems cooler this morning. One of my forecasts has revised the temp down to the 30s today; the other reckons 45C. Perhaps I could become a Weather Better?

  10. 38.7 at 11.17 today here in Melbourne. Feckin feckin feckin rotten weather.
I just bought a couple of misting fans from the Good Guys’ website. They’re being shipped from Tasmania. Surprised, I am not.

  11. Can I has my brane back if anyone spots it? It’s not even that hot here but my sleep is lousy.

  12. And because instead of my brane, my skull seems to be full of hyperactive small rodents, what algorithm determines ‘Top Posts and Pages’? Obviously recently-posted stuff attracting comments scores well, but today I see two posts about the Open Source Boob project at 2 and 3. I would have imagined that lost interest a long time ago?

    • That is determined by daily pageviews, AotQ. For some reason those posts are getting a lot of hits right now, seemingly direct from search engines rather than from any one link, so I don’t know why people have got interested in it again.

  13. So, one of those fluctuations in the quantum intertubes, then.

  14. Gods I hate summer. It took four hours to get home tonight. Lousy bloody railways, lousy bloody politicians neglecting infrastructure for decades …

    • Kinda sorta back on deck after a week of not especially functional thinking. Anyone to whom I owe replies: I might get around to it over the weekend.
