Media Circus: Blaming/Shaming Women Edition

In just the last week Anita Sarkeesian, Zoe Quinn and over 100 female showbiz celebrities brought it all on themselves, doncha know.

Also in the last week our current Federal LNP government has kept on working to push its ideological agenda through Parliament, against what seems horribly likely to be insufficient opposition despite the best efforts of the Greens.

The PM and masked minions are raiding the Universal Entitlements Bank of Australia, while Nick Minchin tries to revive the engine of getaway vehicle Joe Hockey.

Orderly and methodical (The Canberra Times, 26 August 2014)

As usual for media circus threads, please share your bouquets and brickbats for particular items in the mass media, or highlight cogent analysis or pointed twitterstorms etc in new media. Discuss any current sociopolitical issue (the theme of each edition is merely for discussion-starter purposes – all current news items are on topic!).

  1. I hope this link works http://iview.abc.net.au/programs/roast/LE1359H099S00
It’s for today’s episode of The Roast (ep 99, 4th of September 2014). Very well done and humorous take on gaming and sexism.

  2. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-09-04/sparrow-gamergate-when-outsiders-become-the-oppressors/5719584
Here’s one on ‘Gamergate’ from the Drum today. Two of the male commenters are making a complaint to the ACCC about the author for making false and misleading statements, another two are imploring him to research properly and report impartially, and another three are suggesting everyone watch the Youtube videos made by Thunferf00t et all to See The Truth .
It’s the only one I’ve found remotely funny.

  3. I dunno, Eilish. I read those comments yesterday and they just made me feel depressed. So many idiots who just don’t get it..

  4. What an appropriate title for my feminist rage at ABC24 this morning (10 Sept).
A 41 year old woman and her three children have been found shot dead in Lockhart, NSW. Her husband’s ute is abandoned near a dam which police divers are about to investigate.
The journos are asking a local councillor all kinds of questions about financial pressures on the family, a serious car accident last year, etc. As though there might a REASON why four people have been shot dead, as though KILLING PEOPLE is ever a reasonable response to anything, ever.
