This is one of those annoying earwormy songs that get stuck in your head. You’re welcome. I have always assumed that at the end of the song the couple lived happily ever after, perhaps buying a property on the Cape and living a contented life of champagne and laughing at people who do yoga (I do yoga, and I don’t care if they laugh).
Then, after hearing the song again while watching Guardians of the Galaxy (and again and again and again rinse repeat) I started to wonder.
The first line is “I was tired of my lady, we’d been together too long.” So you would assume that he would know her pretty well I would have thought if they have been together that long to be tired of each other. But then the song goes at the end:
‘…”I never knew”..
“That you liked Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
And the feel of the ocean, and the taste of champagne.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
You’re the love that I’ve looked for, come with me, and escape.”’
So dude, you’ve been together for so long that things have been boring for a while and yet you don’t even know what cocktails she likes? Or that she likes champagne? Do you ever talk to her?
This song was released in 1979, so feminism was a thing (I just googled the release date). That got me to wondering if they did in fact live happily ever after. Maybe she was a feminist. Maybe she said to him:
‘You, mate/buster/dude/chump have had every opportunity to find out that I like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, making love on the Cape, and drinking champagne but you never actually asked. So no, it’s a bit too late for you to suddenly discover that I am the woman you have looked for. Three other men and two women have answered by ad in the paper so I’m going off to meet them to see if one of them is the person I’m looking for. Enjoy your life buddy.”
I kinda hope that she did. That way she could have avoided the big fight that I think was almost inevitable when one of them finally brought up the subject of notices in the paper and who was thinking of ditching the other first etc.
Pina Colada recipe
1 ½ cups chilled pineapple juice
1 cup coconut milk
1/3 cup Malibu coconut liqueur
¼ cup Midori
¼ cup fresh lime juice
2 cups crushed ice
Blend all ingredients together and serve. Makes 4 servings.

That song was on high rotation in our car recently, due to said appearance in said soundtrack. It reminds me of the Kate Bush song ‘Baboushka’, which has a similar premise and a similar lack of resolution.
As for experiencing songs in a new way, I think there are a lot that i thought were romantic when I was a teenager that I would now dump in the ‘Urgh! Creepy!’ box.
Lady Sings it Better has done immeasurable damage to my oblivious enjoyment of many songs. But in the very best way possible. https://youtu.be/Ej_cf_SQtPk
Because I am currently the only Sheila in a band of Bruces, I occasionally do a a doubletake when I look at the lyrics for some of their suggestions for our setlist. As in, hell no, I am not going to sing Hey Joe, no matter how great those guitar riffs are. I did generously offer to not exercise a veto if one of them wants to sing it, I’ll just sit it out. So far none of them have volunteered. I think I might sometimes be a bit scary.
