QOTD: What’s not neutrality

Being opposed to expression of certain political positions *IS* taking a political position, not “neutrality”.

From strivingally, noting some inconsistencies in the GassyGoat claims on a recent We Hunted The Mammoth update about the GamerGate culture war and hate campaign.

As Justin Thibeault points out over at Lousy Canuck, it’s not only GassyGoat that runs this topsy-turvy style of reverse-logic playbook.

  1. Two things:
    a) I’m so sick of hearing that crap. Every time there’s a mass shooting in the US the first thing you hear is the GOP warning the Dems not to “politicise” it – which is utter crap because by making certain positions “off-limits” you ARE politicising the event against those positions. And that’s before you get to the fact that political and social ideas *have been* a part of gaming since (at least) the 16-bit era… augh, don’t get me started. 😉
    b) As someone who’s followed HaT on and off for just about a decade (first as an Auspols geek under a different nym, and now as a feminist ally) I’m allowed a moment of glee at being linked by you. I shall take that moment now. 😀

  2. I had a read through the Medium.com article mentioned in the We Hunted The Mammoth OP earlier today (via a linkspam from geekfeminism.org, which has also been covering the whole mess because feminist geekery in progress), and the thing which doesn’t surprise me at all about the whole business is that the guys who are doing this aren’t newbies to the whole business of hounding women off the internet. For some of them, it’s not so much a hobby as the work of a lifetime.
About the only even vaguely interesting tidbit of information to have come out of the whole GamerGate mess is that Adam Baldwin is either a method actor, or a very poor one.

  3. Oh, and something which might be relevant here:
Schopenhauer’s Law of Entropy: when you add a spoonful of wine to a barrel of sewage, you get sewage; when you add a spoonful of sewage to a barrel of wine, you get sewage.

  4. Also on facebook, the LGBT Equality page is now full of people suggesting that giving the Hyatt, where the ACL are having their meeting, a one star rating, is totally not cool, but don’t mention what they are doing to balance their five star rating of the Hyatt in the name of “balance”. One of these things is not like the other.
