Anyone here notice anything about the USAn Big Brother 11 cast?

Not only is the cast mostly white, young, and thin, with no visible disabilities, but the women of colour they’ve chosen are described in tired, stereotypical racist/sexist terms.

Picture 3

An exotic beauty, Chima is truly as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.

Picture 2

Natalie wants people to know that nobody can intimidate her! This feisty Latina has no problem lying, cheating and stealing to win the game.

Here’s what they say about the only man of colour (as far as I can tell) in the house:

Picture 1

People are sometimes thrown off by his exotic look and cannot determine what nationality he is. He affectionately calls himself “blackanese” as a tribute to his African-American and Japanese heritage. He describes himself as ghetto, fabulous and inappropriate, and warns his fellow Houseguests that, although he doesn’t have a temper, he can get bitchy.

In none of the other profiles is race mentioned. White is, of course the default.

And this is why I like Big Brother UK. They’re not perfect; they engage in the sexism and the stereotypes, but… somehow it just feels more good-hearted most of the time. Big Brother US is just made of celluloid and bigotry.

Please don’t comment to tell me how much you hate BB, or how pointless it is or how it’s terribly low-class to watch it. Cheers.

  1. Maud help us, did they really just call her a “feisty Latina”?

  2. I know, right? And knowing BBUS, there’s not a trace of tongue-in-cheek.

  3. My gaydar is twitching at Kevin too, which is probably going to be another source of DRAMA.

  4. *sigh* Exotic.

  5. I didn’t realize that it had premiered already. I will be tuning in for another summer of mindless nonsense. I will say that I have come to expect no better from the show. I have only ever seen one person with a disability and that was in the very first season. Of course they simply could not resist calling a Latina woman fiesty heaven forbid they avoid racist stereotypes because people aren’t capable of being racist all on their own without the help of the media.
