Otterday! And Open Thread

Today’s otters come from mythlady on Flickr, shared under CCL.

Otters at Play: a mosaic of 6 images of otters playing in the water, splashing each other and generally romping

Please feel free to use this thread to natter about anything your heart desires. Is there anything great happening in your life? Anything you want to get off your chest? Reading a good book (or a bad one)? Anything in the news that you’d like to discuss? What have you created lately? Commiserations, felicitations, temptations, contemplations, speculations?

  1. First female Prime Minister to visit first female Governor General to call election today.

    That is all.

  2. I threw my cat in the bathtub last night and gave him a bath.
The cat did not enjoy it as much as these otters.

  3. That’s hilarious, Mindy!

  4. I gave blood for the first time today! I went hiking with my dad, and he went to the university hospital to donate because he missed the last donation drive, and I was bored and had never given blood before and kinda curious, so I gave blood. The nurse showed me how they test for blood types and everything! It was nifty.

  5. Unfortunate update from last open thread:
Last week we found either maggots or termite larvae in the house. We killed what we could see, and searched for the source to no avail.
    It’s been 1 week.
Woke up and went downstairs and killed like 18 flies already. They are maturing all at once I think.
Well. It’s not termites so the house won’t take damage, but…
This is disgusting!!! They’re getting all up in my face and I squash them but more appear! Where are you all coming from?!

  6. Much excitement here this afternoon as my partner got an email from our local paper saying he’s won an iPad. I suspect I may be the one who ends up using it, as his first question, upon forwarding me the email, was “what’s an ipad?”

  7. My depression is spiking, to the point where I fear becoming painful to the people around me. Although I got a few moments of cheer from Mindy’s link, so thanks Mindy.

  8. My pleasure Sunless Nick and I hope you can chase away or at least tame the black dog soon.

  9. Rebekka, enjoy “your” new iPad 🙂
SunlessNick, I feel you, I really do. Take care of yourself.

  10. @ Rebekka wow on the free ipad, and how does your partner ignore all the advertising and stuff going on?

  11. @tigtog, thanks 🙂
@Mindy, he’s in a total world of his own almost all the time. He doesn’t notice anything.

  12. Thanks tigtog and Mindy.

  13. Yay! I thought the story about Mel Gibson moving back to Australia sounded dodgy as hell – I’m not the only one. Phew – we dodged that bullet.

  14. At tonight’s P&C meeting we voted in favour of sending a letter to the Education Minister expressing our support for the following motion:
“That the NSW Minister for Education changes DET policy to allow secular ethics classes to operate as a complement to scripture/SRE classes in NSW primary schools.”
I confess to feeling somewhat pleased at having achieved that 🙂

  15. That Four Corners story about the murder of Kwementyaye Ryder was bloody heart-breaking not to mention rage-inducing. Some Whites in Central Australia are “tired of the way Aboriginal people treat them” and if someone tries to run them down in a river bed, well they shouldn’t have been camping there in the first place. Hideous stuff.

    • We’ve had several comments on my original post about that case where non-indigenous NT folk have tried to defend this level of White violence against Aborigines as somehow deserved because some Aboriginals commit violence too. Some of them have been so hateful that I didn’t publish them.
While I don’t doubt that there is violence initiated by both groups, I very much doubt that there are Aborigines driving cars through where White people are sleeping, and in any case it still doesn’t justify the defendants terrorising people for the fun of it and finishing by beating a man to death. It’s hardly self-defence, is it?
