Only in WA… on unequal pay

Well, probably not only in WA. But sheesh, did my head ever hit the desk when I saw how the awful situation for women’s wages was somehow turned into “Those bitchez are getting it good” headline in The West:

Wages on rise for WA women – The West Australian:

“West Australian women are enjoying a pick-up in wages faster than their male counterparts, new figures out of the Australian Bureau of Statistics show.

The ABS reported today that the adult ordinary full-time weekly wage for a woman in WA increased 1.7 per cent over the past three months to reach $1129.30 or $58,723.60 over the year. It’s up 6.7 per cent over the past 12 months.

By contrast, male wages rose 0.5 per cent over the past quarter to $1473.20 a week or $76,606.40 a year. Over the past year they’ve risen by 5.1 per cent.”

Men’s wages are now only 30% greater than women’s! If this trend continues, they may only get 29% more than women do by 2011! The poor darlings!

  1. In other words: “Repressed Group Makes Minor Progress, but We’re Only Making A Big Deal About It Because Our Privileged Status Isn’t Threatened By It.” If the gap was suddenly closed, I’d bet my dog that ‘what about teh menz!?’ nonsense would be popping up everywhere. *headdesk*

  2. Those poor men. Someone really needs to think of them for a change.

  3. Oh, the poor, poor dears. How awfully hard it must be to be a man these days, what with uppity second-class citizens hookers bitchez women looking for impossible things like equal pay for equal work.

  4. Cool strawmen. The WA article says nothing about pay differences for *equal* work.

  5. The West Australian is generally offensive and ridiculous these days (sometimes at the same time!). I’ve stopped reading it all together.
