Otterday! And Open Thread.

Today’s otter is a North American River Otter, captured by Bethany Weeks (washugenius) and shared on flickr.

damp brown otter is standing up on two hind legs on a rocky surface. It looks like it's playing air guitar.

Please feel free to use this thread to natter about anything your heart desires. Is there anything great happening in your life? Anything you want to get off your chest? Reading a good book (or a bad one)? Anything in the news that you’d like to discuss? What have you created lately? Commiserations, felicitations, temptations, contemplations, speculations? Is anyone baking black bun today?

  1. Guy on twitter looking for an offsider:
Anybody know of a junior web dev in Melbourne looking for some work? Needs experience with Joomla, Drupal and WordPress. I need a sidekick. @jasonferris
Don’t know anything about him, but thought may be of interest to any Hoydens with skillz looking for work.

  2. Good places for him to contact are the DLF (digital labourers’ federation), or IGDA (International game developers’ association – but we’re all unemployed so we do other things), which has a meeting this Tuesday.

  3. Thanks TAK, I will pass the info on. How’s the househunting?

  4. Status report on Overcommitted January.
Done: flat decluttered, flat packed, AdaCamp planning.
Not done: flat move (that’s tomorrow), trip to Victoria, actual AdaCamp, 3xlinux.conf.au talks, shop for son’s birthday.
I’m actually starting to think we’re on top of it, maybe? That’s how much I hate decluttering and packing. It overwhelms 3 talks, an all-day event and an interstate trip in work. That, and I always knew January would contain those things, the move was thrust upon us when a childcare space opened for our son.
Anyone wondering where the DUFC is… I think I will actually be able to get it out next week!

    • Mary, my thoughts will be with you while moving today! I will buy you a very stiff drink (if you would like one) to mark the move when I see you in Melbourne for AdaCamp.

  5. If I had known how much this wasp sting would hurt all day I would have stomped on the wasp this morning. According to Google Dr it could hurt for days. o_O

  6. Ow. Sorry to hear that Mindy! I hope it heals soon.
I have just discovered that Nestle – an ethically questionable company I refuse to support – is a part owner of the company that produces Uncle Tobys products. http://www.ethical.org.au/company/?company=4571
I’m glad I found out, but finding a low-sugar, low-cost replacement for Vita Brits is going to be a pain!

  7. Oh Perla, we barley know thee. What a rye sense of humour you have.
@Mindy – That sounds rather discomforting! My sympathies. A good topical local anaesthetic is Paraderm Plus or Medicreme. And sincere thanks for your concern – the househunting is going ok, I’m getting a lot of “You sound perfect except for the cat”, so I know my applications are good. Just have to find a pet-friendly household and I’m set.
@Mary – What a month! You’ll have used up all your stress for the year and will be blissfully relaxed for the next 11 months, I’m sure. Best of luck!

  8. Even the Daily Mail is having to hedge itself around supporting the latest attacks on disability benefits by our lovely government. Fortunately, the House of Lords seems to be willing to fight it.
[One of the worst parts isn’t about disability per se; the government wants to scrap the Social Fund, which is for loans to cover sudden crisis expenses that people are too poor to afford, like a cooker or fridge exploding, or a medical expense that needs to be paid right now. The government wants it gone]
The Spartacus Report is a bright spot though.
